    Death

Despite living here over 20 years, I still get surprised by some of the locals bizzare habits.

Yesterday a neighbour of my mother in law died. She lived alone in a small rented house in Bangkok and all of her relatives live in a village in Ratchburi. So obviously the funeral would need to take place in her home village. The question was, how to get the body to the village?

My Mother In Law decided that she would handle it. So a taxi was summoned and after some persuading, the driver agreed to take my mother in law and the corpse to Ratchburi!

Weird! I wonder what would have happened if a cop had pulled the taxi over for a check!

did they throw the corpse in with the luggage in the back, prop her up in the passenger seat, or let her drive?

^^ I am sure the conscientious accompanying taxi passenger would plug the holes first.

in the uk you can transport a body as long as none of it is showing to the public, so it must be wrapped up.

I saw a fellow being ferried to hospital on a motorbike with his guts hanging out in Pattaya a couple of years ago. Samurai sword apparently.

Certainly not in Thailand. Coincidentally, my mil died a week ago Sunday. Had the usual week long Thai funeral ceremony.

On the last day, just before the cremation, the entire village lined up for a last look at the old gal. Even the kids. Seeing dead bodies is not a big deal nor a shock to Thais.

IMO, more healthy than the revulsion many westerners have when they see a dead body.
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.

Actually, the corpse was probably the only one in the Taxi wearing a seatbelt, to hold it upright.

When my wifes grandad died and I was told I would be driving the body back to the village I got all freaked out and just had a mental image of him being propped up on the back seat for the 4 hour drive.

Luckily they'd put him in a box so we were able to lay him in the back of the truck. The box did stick out the back too far though so the nephews had to sit in the back as well to make sure he didn't slide off the back.

I had to be careful over bumps.

Why? I doubt he would have complained?
