365 days to learn 365 Thai phrases

It is my goal to learn a new Thai phrase every day. I have been doing so for some time. The following posts will be basic phrases that I have learned already. I hope it helps you as well. Get your wife / gf / friend to read the Thai so you can get the correct pronunciation and the spend all day practicing that phrase.

We all know or should know the basics like Sawasdee, khob kuhn, sabai dee mai, pai nai and so forth, so I will skip those.

So let's get started!!

The idea of a phrase a day sounds good. Could you create a thread that does not allow anyone to comment, just your phrase for the day?? That way we would not have to wade through the garbage everyday to get to the jewel.

Agreed. And if its not possible could anyone who posts, post the Thai language spelling with it like Chittown did as when ever any of us try to write Thai in English it sounds wrong to a person reading who's not from the same country as the author.

Bai la der - Lao slang for see you later. Ask your mrs, this will have Thai's rolling in mirth for some reason. I've had a whole market go off after saying it.

Wela bpen gnern bpen tong.

Time is money.

Components...

Wela = "time" (เวลา)

Bpen = "is" (เป็น)

ngern = "money/silver" (เงิน)

Tong = "gold" (ทอง)

So, it translates directly as "time is money/silver is gold"

True, I have tried to learn to read and write, but gee whiz the blending of consonants and vowels - insane.

Yep, learning to read is a good idea..google 'Manee and Friends' for an excellent start, but the tones can go fuck themselves..

I can read Thai okay and I enjoy reading it too, I am a slow writer though and my spelling in Thai is terrible, I find writing Thai extremely difficult and get no enjoyment out of it at all.

I don't know if you have had any formal teaching of reading and writing Thai, but if you can speak and understand half decent Thai, which I believe you do, then learning to read is not so bad, I think I personaly could teach a farang to read Thai to intermediate level (from knowing nothing) in about 40 hours, so long as they practiced at home. There is of course much more to reading than that, but it would easily be enough to read the basics etc, if you already have some knowledge of speaking.
