fukkem, then!
paranoid pricks!
how would a volunteer endanger a fkkn mat-weaver's job?
i know that there are millions of farangs just waiting for the opportunity to become labourers, mat-weavers, buffalo tenders, etc in thailand, and i can understand the authorities' concern, since these are all highly sought-after thai proffessions, but volunteers, ffs!?

Knew some guys on Samui that got busted for no WP and they were only standing behind the bar talking to customers.

Trying to squash the opposition I see.
I just purchased a quantity of Thai Baht.............do I need a work permit or my head examined ?
Item 30 in the list.....how do all the foreign contracters here get away with it then ??
I know of many project managers and Archi's and designers etc.
Tourist police volunteers don't need work permits.Originally Posted by Thetyim

There were 2 guys, bar owners in Korat afraid of labour dept. and police visits...
One of them was once even arrested, it was not his real wife, just a partner. His wife is running another bar in Jomtien, so i believe that you cannot work on another place then where you wife is ?!? Married to a Thai he is.
The other one married in the temple only and not at the Amphoe. Was often visited by police always remembering him not to go back of the bar.
banana republic, ok here and today, tomorow another story...
Both. Now about that loan you promised me...Originally Posted by 12Call

oh, there were a few attempts made to "have me taken care of",
i must admit that i "got lucky" on a couple of occasions
but they are not really as tough as they make out they are.
they feed on fear and take advantage of it, much like a dog will sense your fear and attack.
if you keep your head, and stand up to them, they get confused and back down.
a uniform and a gun, while it may make him walk taller, doesn't cure his inherent thai cowardice.
there goes my business planOriginally Posted by wha ?

It's also true that you do not need a work permit even if you're not married. You are restricted to the amount of work within the business though.
Running a bar or restaurant is not a problem without a permit. You can check goods and takings for instance, but to serve from behind the bar is prohibited.

it DOES seem that it depends on WHERE one lives in thailand , whether one is going to pick up a plomplem or not:
i remember watching a programme on thai tv, where they interviewed a farang and his wife, who were trying fishfarming, growing veg, etc, and the farang was the focus, and the "hero " of the story. he had lost everything and eventually, with the support of his thai wife, had picked himself up, and with a bit of innovation and improvisation , was making a modest life for himself and his family, and spoke reasonably decent thai.
i am damn sure he had no wp; have no idea what kind of visa he was on, the point is that the cops left him alone to do his thing.
there definitely seem to be differing standards applied in thailand and the wp thing.
seems it is only a crime to work in thailand if someone percieves you to be making some money, and then sets the wheels in motion to have you closed down or deported.
^It's generally not what you know but who you know, also it is a lot easier for them to extort money out of some dumb fuk who has only been here 6 months and gets pissed in his bar everyday than someone who speaks Thai and either does know high ups or is thought to know higher ups to the ones who do the extorting.
