Dek Chai MONG, who so unfortunatley had such a name. about 2 or 3 weeks ago this boy won a paper dart competion, the prize was to go on an all expenses paid trip to japan to compete in the world championship dart throwing competition being held there.

fantastic, you would think, a dream come true for this little lad.

unfortunately for him he was the son of burmese migrant workers and even though he was born here he had no papers and was effectively stateless.

there were news reports and footage a couple of weeks ago of him travelling to immigration offices with his mum only to be told by killjoy thai government official that no, he was stateless, he couldnt have any travel papers, rules are rules and he had better forget all about the whole thing. footage of him tearfully walking out of the local government offices were shown on tv and soon there was a media campaign in support of the lad.

next day the prime minister went to visit him, (along with 10,000 journos and cameras) and instructed the officials to give him his papers pronto. pictures of the now smiling lad in conversation with abisit were beamed around the nation.

and off he went to japan where he did very well in the competition. he captured the hearts of the nation for a brief while.

hes now back home again, probably living in a tin hut and mixing cement for a condo development somewhere, but he had his 15 minutes of fame and it brought some (temporary) joy into the poor kids life.

i have no doubt that the boy did a great job, and deserved to win a local competition, even the right to compete overseas, but let's just look at it for a moment:
some poor (or even rich) kid from, say, america or england, manages to fold a paper aeroplane that actually flies..............
AND THE 'KKIN PRESIDENT finds it necessary to pay him a visit and make an international incident out of it...................

This little Dek Chai Mong, made a paper plane, won all the adoration of Thailand, and for what? Did they really think making a paper plane was going to right the wrongs?

But now look at the Thais!

It's farcical, but sad at the same time, they rant on and on about these prizewinners, and most of the time they win less than the price of a cup of tea, then they emulate, it is the same as they do in business, someone opens a fried rice stall, two weeks later there are twenty of the fuckers next to each other...fuck these people must be desperate, and if you could channel that in the correct direction, who knows where the country would end up!

As they are, they seem like last desperate attempts to grab the last piece of wood from the sinking ship.

Agree that Thai news coverage is shallow and not much on the real news of the country or the world.

However, I'm not so sure the overwhelmingly left wnig media of the west covers the news as it should be either.

You're describing what happens in pretty much every news programme on the planet.That said, I don't think there's a Thai news programme half as vacuous as the British Channel 5 news. And as for Fox, Thailand is a beacon of journalistic integrity by comparison.

You may well be correct, I wouldn't know.
Last time I lived in the UK we had four channels, BBC1, BBC2, ITV and Channel 4, so I have never seen Channel 5 , and as far as I know Fox TV is up there with the shit dripping crpa associated with American "journalism" again, not a channel I have ever seen.

But, I have never, (in my 4 channel experience) ever seen as much shit on a TV as I have here.

I spent a few years in Cina, a few years in Germany, a few years in Hong kong, a little time in Indonesia, singapore, Austria, France, Spain and North Africa, (and Scotland a bit,) but never hane I seen the crap that I see here.

I initially thought of sending a letter to the King, expressing my hopes that he would do something about the TV here for kids, to give them a bit of a chance.

That was when I was naieve enough to believe that any of these people cared!

The longer you stay here the more you realise, these fuckers don't give a shit. as long as the gravy train arrives on time!

I know, I can do that, (when this poxy internet connection works, but that is not the point, I am trying to say, what fucking hope have people here got of getting anything worthwhile from the TV - shit we had Blue Peter, John Cravens Newsround, umpteen different programs for kids, Paddington Bear, The Wombles, and everyone was made for kids, and everyone was way ahead of the shit these people pump out for adults! It is as if the TV delivers programs to adults as if they are 5 year olds.

Maybe it's just me, but over the years I have really begun to hate the way this country is run (please lets not have the usual Thai visa response of - if you don't like it then fuck off) ( I am genuinely trying to make a point) and the way it treats its people. It is like a rotting tree, full of rotting fruit, everything looks really nice from the outside, until you really take a good bite, and then you get the mouthfull of worms!
