Run in (almost) with the airport Mafia?

What was this all about do you reckon?
Last Friday as I was leaving Bangkok.
I took the hotel car, a neat and clean late model Toyta, to the airport arriving about 8am.
As we drove up the ramp to the departure concourse there were about six cops with traffic cones and a small tent and table.
They chose us to pull over, no one else, then a cop came over and interrogated the driver for 5 minutes.
The driver showed him all kinds of papers (obviously registration etc) and kept pointing back at me and babbled on at the cop who seemed reluctant to let us go but apparently couldn't find reason to keep us.
As we drove off the driver looked back at me with a big relieved smile on his face (I could have sworn I saw sweat beads on his forehead) muttering "mafia, mafia.
    he was obviously crapping himself.
What were they up to? They weren't pulling all cars over and this guys paperwork was obviously in order.

Crackdown on illegal taxi and tour operators...

Just came through Suvi last day, must say that there were less people asking for "Taxi sir ?"

May be only 3 compared to 10 or 20 usually

That's exactly what I assumed he meant.

Maybe it was such a rare car, I've never heard of a toyta before.

The nice police were just looking after your interests, making sure that the vehicle you were being delivered in was of proper provenance and the driver had the correct paperwork in triplicate
