Yes, I believe you have to complete this course:

One of the motosai drivers- and the craziest one at that- at the end of my soi is what I take to be a 16-17 year-old girl. I'll ask her how she chose this profession next time I see her, except I really don't want to ride with her, she's nuts and very light.

I think we live on the same soi!
I've seen these guys at the test center so there must be a test or some kinda bribe.
Right now I seem to get the same dude every day. He's well into his 70's and likes to accelerate to about 30 and then brake to about 10 over and over again.
Its crap if your trying to eat noodle soup or enjoy a beer. His harsh braking makes the beer go down his back and all over the noodles.
His jacket has not been washed in so long that when you try to suck the soup out of the fabric it tastes like an old peoples home.
There are younger guys with new jackets but I never seem to get them.

Not for the faint of heart , u know
Ask yourself these…
-do you like getting dark?
-do you like people HUGGing you?
-R U a black smoke lover?
-do you like “risk taking”?
-do you like driving without looking at the road or other traffics?
-do you like maneuvering around many obstacles and people?
Just to name a few
Main thing they test you for is alcohol tolerance,, you have to be able to ride with a blood alcohol level of 3.8 or higher to qualify.
I have to say that in the near eight years I have known Thailand I have never heard of a passenger fatality. I'm sure there has been, but surprised to never have seen a morbid Pattaya style news item on it.
I've been on a few when they've crashed. Mostly in Koh Pangnan and Samui though so the driver was probably really drunk. Only once in Bangkok when the bike I was on the back of side swiped a car and left a nasty scratch.
There is another woman motosai driver at a stand near my soi, but she is quite sober and I don't mind riding with her.
My understanding about the large group at the end of my soi is that there is some kind of family connection among them. With the exception of the crazy wee lass and one of the guys, that group is quite surly. If I walk up one soi there is another group which is very friendly. I'm guessing the alpha male in each pack sets the general tone.
Sounds quite tribal, doesn't it . . .
