    Prostitution statistics

    Taken from an official survey

There were an estimated 80,000 prostitutes as well as uncounted thousands of amateurs. Many of the professional girls were under 15; and more than half worked in brothels of which there were about three thousand in all, the most squalid being down by the river. In certain areas, every room in every house was given over to prostitution. The girls in those areas, if not prostitutes already would, as likely as not, soon become so. A police superintendent recorded that elderly gentlemen could be found in every room with two children in each bed. and so on.....

for those amongst us who have no knowledge of poverty, this may come as a surprise
    I have reported your post

    ^ Where? Pattaya?

If so the number seems a bit low.

correct DrBOb, London was far worse than Pattaya today

and it was in all cities around the country

the scandal of poverty and prostitution led to many social reforms that Brits enjoy today, even though they moan about them incessantly

Hard to calculate, and the number in the OP does seem low.

And ^ yes, uni students will do this on the side.

Prostitution has been around since one lady monkey saw a man monkey and he had something to eat. She thought "I'm hungry" and one thing lead to another.

Ummm, OK. So how about some aged reports about burning witches to justify, oh I don't know, whatever irks you.

By trying to compare modern-day Thailand with Victorian England you do what Thais do best, shoot yourself in the foot. Trying to say 'hey, it's not so bad here, you did the same centuries ago' you're just saying the Thai are backward, which is what everyone is saying anyhow.

Spin, if you had read the article and responses, you would have been informed that the report was of Victorian England

no comparisons were made, it was just a factual report from those times

I suppose the reason for posting it was to show that without the welfare state, poverty drives people to depravity and exploitation.

Back to Thailand... that country has only started to develop and poverty is still very real. The amount of prostitution is high because of that reason.

The very same type people who took advantage of the girls in Victorian England are doing so today, those with more money. The attitudes haven't changed much either

The hovels that litter the border areas of Thailand are indeed a testament to the plight of the extremely poor. Any floor space has the potential to serve as a knockshop. In comparison, the sex tourist spots like Pattaya, Patong and Patpong are veritable paradises for the girls who can manage to find work there.

We don't live in a 'present' vacuum do we. What we say and do is influenced by what went before and what we hope will be in future.

Context, as they say. Nice try, but immature.

    what is immature Fly?

I posted the article to see if the responses immediately assumed it was referring to Thailand. DrBOb spoiled that by thinking

We, as farang, have a history that can be equated to what Thailand is going through in the present day. That should help us understand, but it doesn't seem to because of ignorance and predujice

Excellent; so prostitution in Victorian England can illustrate for us how stupid Thais are.

If Andy's intent was to expose the underlying attitudes of some towards Thais then he has done that in spades hasn't he.

I suppose that was not my intention, although it was a risk due to the attitudes of some posters

my intention was to make people think why the situation is so bad in Thailand, rather than just blaming the Thai "mentality"

Asia is a polygemist society, the same as China was along time ago, an emperor may have many wifes and or conqubines, all of which were allowed to bear him children. Often the first wife or whore to bear him an heir became number one.
This attitude underpins the culture of prostitution In Thailand which was outlawed in the 1930's I believe.
The girls are just playing the odds and seeing how generous the man is, that's the long game. the short game is "I'm hungry" and so is my child. My Thai boyfriend spent all our money on yah bar and Sang Som, and he's a fuk wit. Better go short time or my child will starve, he won't know, doubt if he'll even care allong as he gets his yah and whiskey. I'm sure I'd be better off with a farang, at least he may have money.
