Duty Free Whisky purchase... recommendations required...

I want to start enjoying whisky. Not in an alcoholic sort of way, just enjoy a dram now and then..

I have been going through the 'Johnnies' recently, as this is the brand that the natives tend to like and it's them that help me get through the bottle. Been picking up a different colour of it when I return from work and land at Swampybum... Red, Black, Gold, Green and Blue. (Why is Gold not the top of the pecking order?)

But it's time to veer away from the usual JW next time and try something different. Educate the locals (and myself) as to what a real good whisky is..

So... if you enjoy a whisky (or even a whiskey) what do you tend to go for?

^ Laphroaig is one of the main contenders for the first attempt at enjoying whisky... I have tried it before, but that was a bad experience which ended up with me lying naked on the steps of a caravan in Findhorn spewing my guts up into a puddle of mud... I was only 15 though and didn't know how to drink...

I remember it had a nice peaty taste... (the whisky, not the puddle of mud).

I think i would have to try an older, more expensive one than the 10 year old... If it's more expensive it has to taste better doesn't it?

^ Had a similar experience at that age with whiskey, Passed out on a beach midwinter, woke up the next morning covered in puke and seagulls.
Never touched Whiskey since that time.

Pick up a different single malt each time you come in.
My favourite is Bowmore.

I have enjoyed my dabble witn the different Johnny Walker levels and I think it could be a rewarding new hobby...

And I'm going to throw Glenfiddich in there because it's the only distillery I have ever been to.

^ I like the sound of finishing it in Oak Sherry Casks... Imagine that would give it a nice taste but I know jack shit.

I plan to drink whatever I get on ice... I think the Thais call this 'Lock and Load' or maybe they are trying to say 'Rock and roll'...

The brother out-law who helps me drink it will probably want it with soda.

As an aside - if you ever get a Swensens ice cream cake to take away use the surrounding ice for your drinks... great effect... magic potion style.

Sometimes marmite can be a bit of a neanderthal.

There are two ways to drink malt.

1. Neat

2. A single measure of malt poured over a single ice cube in a heavy bottomed tumbler. (Recommended for use in hot climates).

I used to like Chevas Regal and Johnnie Walker Black,, But had my last drink of the stuff [alcohol] 29 years ago 14/01/1982 at around 1700 and have enjoyed the passing years immensely.
That is my recommendation.

Johnny Walker Blue label is quite nice too...

My father was a Wild Turkey man... Very smooth blended bourbon whiskey...

^^^ Good on you blackgang... Should my new hobby become a problem I will remember your recommendation... I have 2 more dry weeks offshore on a boat so just enjoying the pictures of them so far.

sabangs suggestion to just pick up one each time I return from work sounds about right... (maybe 2)

I picked up the Blue label last time passing through the airport... very nice it was too.. 4000 baht for a 750ml bottle at duty free but is 7500 baht for the same bottle in the supermarkets.

I shared a bottle of Wild turkey with a couple of mates one night in a place called Slim in Pattaya (think it's called Fashion Club now)... We all ended up arguing at the end of the night and took off in different directions.. Couldn't remember what we argued about the next day and put it down to the effects of Wild Turkey... So that's not making the list.

It's the alcohol in the bottle, not what bottle it is in, all does that shit to me and the more I drank the worse it got.
My Grams brother, my great uncle drank Ol Granddad 100 Proof right outta the jar, and he was 2 years older than I am now when he died with the lining out of his throat dripping out of his mouth from the cancer eating a hole in his throat..

Bowmore is a good starter - the 12 year is only 1200baht , but maybe try the 17 year.

the Laphroaig quarter cask can be a bit strong in taste for some.

best part about travelling through the airport is the ability to pick up a bottle of single malt - if you are transiting through Singapore you might want to buy there as they have a larger range and it is slightly cheaper.
