Has my life gone wrong if I end up living in The West?

This was the advice I was given this morning by a man who used to live here but now limits his time here to holidays, adding that it took him too many wasted superficial years away from what is important to see the light.

I have been offered a job in London that pays half of what I can earn now in Asia. I can live pretty badly on that. I can do fuck all and live in a depressing bedsit and travel around on my oyster card and eat in macdonalds every night as if I am some kind of sad loser. But the job seems completely dead-end (seems like locals want to use poor people but don't want poor people to progress here), i can't buy a house, and lots of other rubbish too like the ridiculously unrealistic carrot of the good life here and the general greyness of life for those who aren't David Beckham, John Terry or Katie Price.

I am tempted to throw caution to the wind but i wind up asking myself why. Lots of doubts that welcome your perspective.

--so this is just changing someone else's post (lesmiles) slightly to bear on the reality of many people living in the West who head to Thailand or similar places for the hope of a better life.

by the way did I mention that a sex-life here is also non existent once you are past 30?

In my case, Yes. I'm self funded, but even if I ran out of money I'd rather stay here and get a job than move back.

Depends if you burn your bridges back to Asia or not.

I would not move to the west unless they paid me double to my 250k baht a week i am used to.

But Asia is not for everyone, but I make it work for me....cos I smarter than most.
I like poisoning my neighbours dogs till they die cos I'm a cnut

Have you suggested to your friend that he tries living in Yorkshire. He will still be poor and have no sex life, and his life will still be grey, but the majority of his neighbours will be able to speak English.

It's just a shame that if you use that super fast internet to download anything "illegal" (which I always thought was the point of fast connections, what else is there to do with it?), then you'll get the boot or arrested...as they monitor your every move now.

    Deep joy.

it's bizarre what people fuss about here how - you really notice it after being in Asia for 2 years.

The latest thing is the 'light bulb crisis' - all vendors of light bulbs (in the UK) must stop selling the old fashioned ones soon so now there is a mad panic with people hunting round the shops to get the last stock of the old ones.

Now, supposedly you will have to pay higher council tax rates if your house does not have double glazing and if you want to rent you cannot state that you do not want foreign tennants (that's racist you see) - what a load of bollocks!

Well some people that want to rent their property out may feel more comfortable dealing with someone of their own nationality, someone who can at least speak the same language. It's hardly racist wanting that.

If I were to go looking for a job and state at the interview that I was an alcoholic then surely I could not go around pleading discrimination when turned down - same thing really.

But regardless of your personal opinion on the matter, shouldn't a landlord be able to choose whether or not he wants johnny foreigners living in his house?

It's racist to presume that just because someone's a foreigner that they can't speak English.

And of course the reverse applies too; you couldn't complain if you were denied accomodation in a non-English speaking country because you didn't speak the language.

Yes, in the same way he might not want students living there.

They may, but that hardly matters. If you have a contract, they have to understand it, their problem

anyway, most foreigners can speak enough English to talk to you, or have a friend who helps them

so being a foreigner is the same as not being able to control yourself?

I try not to complain too much when out in Asia as that's all I'd ever be doing but I've certainly been turned down or been asked to pay 10 times the price on accommodation (which is basically the same thing) for being foreign.

There are similarities as it happens.

Being an alcoholic is a due to a lack of control though really this is a choice - no one is forcing liquid down your throat. Being a foreigner abroad is also essentially a choice for most people, thus you have to put up with the local customs and treat them as 'part of the job'.

Usually when you rent a house out to a Pole or two the next thing you know there are ten of the fuckers living in the same room - this is why landlords may be sceptical.

Nothing to do with racism - in fact as a white person it is impossible to be racist to a Pole because they are also white.
