Phuket house will cost 100 baht for lucky winner

The Toyota Vigo that was top prize at last year’s Phuket Red Cross Fair. Remarkably the car, valued at 650,000 baht, went unclaimed and had to be auctioned off after the fair.

PHUKET CITY: The top prize in this year’s Red Cross Fair raffle will be nothing less than a new home, it was announced yesterday.

In past years the top prize has always been a car or truck, but this year the Red Cross is upping the ante.

“I am sure no province in Thailand has ever dared to give away as big a reward as this before. But we are Phuket, so why not?” Phuket Governor Wichai Phraisa-ngop said.

At yesterday’s press conference at Phuket Provincial Hall to announce details of the fair, Gov Wichai was joined by his wife Taisika, who serves as president of the Phuket chapter of the Thai Red Cross Society.

There are Thai Red Cross Society chapters in all Thai provinces, with wives of governors customarily serving as chairwomen.

This year’s Red Cross Fair will take place at Saphan Hin for 10 days starting December 26.

Entrance is free and there is always a wide variety of games, entertainment and free medical services, such as testing for high blood pressure and diabetes.

In addition to the top prize of a detached home covering 60 square wah, prizes will include a Toyota Vigo truck, five motorcycles, five flat screen televisions, five large refrigerators, bicycles, fans and much more.

Last year, proceeds from the sale of 100-baht raffle tickets generated 3 million baht, leaving the Red Cross with just over 1 million baht in profit after costs were deducted, Gov Wichai said.

“This year we expect ticket sales to be much higher because of such a large grand prize,” he said.

The lucky winner would end up with a new home for just 100 baht (approx US$2.94), he said.

Remarkably, nobody came forward to claim last year’s top prize, a Toyota Vigo valued at 650,000 baht.

The pick-up truck was later auctioned off in mid-March.

The governor urged private sector parties willing to donate prizes for the raffle to contact the Phuket Red Cross (Tel: 076-211 766; 081-979 1766) or any local government administrative office.

How will they wriggle out of it if a falang buys the lucky ticket ?

It is my understanding that lottery and raffle prizes are assigned to the ticket holder and cannot be transferred to a third party .

Any ideas ( before I buy a couple of thousand bhat worth of tickets )

Quite amazing how such a small plot of land can have a detached house on it, anyway it's probably best if farangs don't buy tickets just in case they win, what with the ongoing police investigations in Phuket against the nasty foriegn land and house owning scum at the moment.

I think the red cross have shot themselves in the foot with this one, they can't give away what to some may be an illegal prize, especially at this time whilst the police etc are investigating all the nasty farang Phuket scum.

just two small points:

It says (as I read it) the house "covering 60 square wah" - which says little about tha plot size, and more pertinently, I see nothing in the article that says the land is also included in the prize?

I am far from an expert on this DD, but as far as I am aware, there is no restriction on a farang buying a house (the building) the restriction is on owning the land. hence the house could be the prize, but it is on land leased for 30 years - after which time you can pick up your house and put it where you want......

(I must admit, i thought many farangs did it this way - they own the house and the missus the land, which they then lease for 30 years..).

I am happy to be corrected however...

So nidhog, the top prize at this fair is a house, this you may have to knock down and rebuild somewhere else in 3 to 30 years time, sounds like a great prize, put me down for some tickets.

is it my raffle DD? did I organize it? have I anything to do with it?

All I have done is offered a possible explanation as to how a house could be a prize in a raffle in which a foreigner may buy a ticket. A possible explanation. Not the possible, just a possible.

Don't hold me responsible for the f*cked up thai laws that allow a foreigner to own a house, but not the land, and don't hold me responsible for Thais organizing a raffle that may, as you note be f*cked up.

Now - you wanna flog this dead horse a bit more - or are we done?

It aint a possibility, I am willing to bet money that those fokwitts are giving away the ownership to a house and the land as a first prize, sadly thay are fokwitts and didn't think it through, are you willing to put money on your beliefs?
