Ickle Chickles Mashed in Chickie Masher

Where can you get one of these machines? Would it work on hamsters and kittens?

Chicks 'ground alive' by poultry producer | World News | News.com.au

A CLIP where thousands of discarded baby chickens are shown being ground up alive at the world's largest egg-laying breed hatchery has been released by animal rights activists.

Mercy For Animals said it witnessed the cruelty during an undercover investigation at the Spencer hatchery in Iowa, run by Hy-Line international.

The organisation said nearly 150,000 male chickens who hatch every 24 hours were separated from females, and, because they were unable to be raised for egg production, tossed into chutes which haul them away to their deaths.

"They are destined to die on day one because they cannot produce eggs and do not grow large or fast enough to be raised profitably for meat," the group said.

"Their lives are cut short when they are dropped into a grinding machine where they are torn to pieces.

"Over 30 million male chicks meet their fate this way each year at this facility."

There was a clip of a conveyor belt hatchery feeding chicks into a machine in the movie Baraka but it did not pan down to show the mashed chick meat coming out the pipe in the bottom.

I bet the mush gets shipped by the barrel to KFC to make the spicy sizzler wraps.

But the company also noted that "instantaneous euthanasia" - a reference to killing of male chicks by the grinder - is a standard practice supported by the animal veterinary and scientific community.

According to Mercy for Animals, male chicks are of no use to the industry because they can't lay eggs and don't grow large or quickly enough to be raised profitably for meat. That results in the killing of 200 million male chicks a year.

The United Egg Producers, a trade group for U.S. egg farmers, confirmed that figure and the practice behind it.

"There is, unfortunately, no way to breed eggs that only produce female hens," said the group's spokesman, Mitch Head. "If someone has a need for 200 million male chicks, we're happy to provide them to anyone who wants them. But we can find no market, no need."

Using a grinder, Head said, "is the most instantaneous way to euthanize chicks."

There is no federal law that ensures the humane euthanasia of animals on farms or hatcheries, according to Jonathan Lovvorn, vice president and chief counsel of the Humane Society of the United States.

Surely 1 in 100,000 or so male chicks must hit the jackpot and get spared the grinder for stud duty?

Its a tough job but somebody's gotta do it.

At what age is a chick recognisable as male or female? Obviously not applicable to Thailand where males often turn into female "chics" at all ages.

Wouldn't lethal injection be more humane?

Or else put them all in a big room with a glass wall and then charge contestants for 60 seconds entry to see how many they can stamp on and win prizes.
