It seems the world opens their wallets as well as their hearts to the people of Haiti. Its not so long ago Thailand needed the worlds assistance, is it known the response of the Thai goverment to the Haiti disaster appeal?

PM: Government to give rice to Haiti

PM: Government to give rice to Haiti
    Published: 19/01/2010 at 11:41 AM
    Online news: Breakingnews

The Thai government will donate rice to help the people in earthquake-hit Haiti, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Tuesday.

"The government decided not to donate money [to Haiti] because the country would just spend the money to buy goods anyway," Mr Abhisit said.

The government was widely criticised for initially donating only US$20,000 to Haiti after it was devastated by the 7.0-magnitude earthquake last week.

On economic issues, the prime minister said Japan External Trade organisation (Jetro) chairman Yasuo Hayashi will not visit him to discuss the problems in Rayong's Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate, despite reports to the contrary.

"The Jetro chairman has met former deputy prime minister Korbsak Sabhavasu and Industry Minister Charnchai Chairungruang several times to discuss the Map Ta Phut impasse already," he said.

Work on 64 out of 76 new industrial projects in the country's largest industrial estate has been suspended by the Supreme Administrative Court after they failed to comply with constitutional requirements on the need for environmental and health impact assessments.

Mr Abhisit said he had talked with a Nobel Prize-winning economist, American Eric Maskin, and they agreed the economy will perform better this year than last year.

Maybe I’m reading something different,…but it seems that some are trying to aid the victims.

Mr Kasit yesterday said sending the rice by air through the WFP would cost US$10 million (330 million baht), so the government was looking at sending it by ship.

Thailand will donate 20,000 tonnes of rice. It has also given $100,000 in humanitarian aid to help the quake-hit country. The money was handed over by Thai diplomats in Mexico City to the Haitian ambassador to Mexico, the minister said.

The Foreign Ministry will hold talks today with other government agencies on further assistance, including the possibility of sending army engineers, doctors and nurses to join United Nations effort to help rebuild the country.

The centre will remain open until Feb 3 to receive cash donations. Donors can go to the centre or transfer the money to Krung Thai Bank's Government House branch.

The centre received 2.3 million baht on its first day. Mr Veerachai said the government wanted people to donate money rather than relief items because of the difficulty in transporting supplies to Haiti.

Yes indeed he knows how to play the game! They probably won't get much rice either, if they are lucky they might get some OTOP products, a few old rice cakes passed their sell by date, a bottle of lao kow, some red bull, I doubt there will be much in store for Haiti from Thailand, as I already posted in my HATE post in the MKP...maybe they could send some old flip flops? or Rotten Lam Yai, the ones that they tried to flog to the Chinese, I am sure these people would appreciate their generosity.

They could fly out a transport plane full of the scabby dogs from around the Sois...with a recipe for Gaeng Om.

Thai people have donated 85 million baht so far, don't get confused between the people, who've been very generous in their donations, and the criminal incompetents who run the government.

Understand what you mean there, but!

Did they cough this up as a kind of refund for 85 people they swindled with the Gold Card Fraud? How Generous, I bow to them!

They stole millions (again not the average Thai) but as a crooked bunch of twats! 85 million! and a bag of rice!...fuckers!

    From the Bangkok Post

    THE ELITE CARD!

It promised fast-track immigration privileges, long-term property leases and discounts at luxury spas, golf courses and hotels. Thaksin confidently predicted it would attract one million cardholders by 2008, but to date has drawn just 2,570.

    At a Million a shot?

2.75 Billion...and these fuckers donate 18 million, it is however 19 million more than I would donate!

WTF are you on, Miggins? What has the Thailand Elite Card scam got to do with Somchai the Kwai Herder donating his 20 Baht to Haiti? You're not seriously telling us you were brain-damaged enough to buy one of those magic cards, are you?

The average Thai on the street has donated quite a bit of their own hard earned money.

Anyone who has donated anything has given more than me, how many people who posted in this thread have made a donation?

More power to you if you have done.

Not at all, I simply tried to put into perspective...18 million Baht donated by Thailand equates to 18 stupid people ripped off by the government...hardly a large donation of cash, in the scope of things.

And the really sad thing is, just as in the Tsunami, I bet poor Mr. Somchais well mean't 20 baht will end up as 5 Baht before it gets out here, and it will be lucky to be one Baht by the time it reaches the Chimp Fest over there, by the time every Tom Dick and Harry have had their cut...these fuckers are worse than a coke dealer!
