    Canadian couple...

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — A photograph of a wheelchair-bound, crying elderly Canadian couple separated into two different care homes after 62 years of marriage because no beds were available together has received international attention.

So he is in a "nursing" home because he is sick and his wife wants to take a bed that could otherwise be used for someone else who is needs to be in a "nursing" home as opposed to a home for the elderly, which is what she is probably in.

It is sad but she should realize that he cannot live in her home as they don't have the facilities and she cannot take up a valuable bed in his home? I suspect they should have applied "together" but...

Life sucks especially when you are old.

Having a granddaughter with a sense of entitlement helps especially if she doesn't look like the south end of a north bound bus.

It is Canada and they are nice people so I suspect everything that can be done is being done, it simply takes time.
Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?
I apologize if any offence was caused. unless it was intended.

    I don't have Facebook!

VocalNeal, you have the story somewhat back to front. He was in a home, but got sick, went to a a special place for treatment, she then went to a home to be with him, but when he was well enough to be moved back there was no space for him. I suspect that much of the time apart was because he was sick in the hospital, and the home she is now in will house him as soon as somebody else in the home is good enough to die and make space for him...

All couples are going to have to face this at one stage of a relationship , one of them will die first.
The other will have to be lonely.

Is there crowdfunding page yet? Or are they too old for that?

Whatever, it's a shame, and as VocalNeal said, life sucks (at times). Let's hope they can stay together again soon.

Yeah, I agree that it's sad and all that, and also that the blonde girl is getting her 15mins, but I think it will work out well in time.

Also, I know it's normal in western cultures to put old folks in a home, and I had a great uncle in a home in the UK recently, but it's not very nice; maybe the Thai/Asian way of keeping them at home somehow in an extended family unit is better.

Frankly, the Western manner in which to throw Mom and Pop into a "retirement" institution is quite barbaric and typical of any lack of respect, honor, or love regarding elders.

Reflective of the lesser cultural commitment towards social and familial extensions. Amongst many aspects, the West has a lot to learn - if they ever do.

My grand dad moved into a nursing home and a few weeks later I phoned to my nan enquiring as to how he was settling in.
Nan. ''He's like a fish out of water.''
Gazza. ''You mean he's finding it hard to adjust?''
    Nan. ''No. He's dead.''

I sent an email to a longtime friend who is a health care professional in BC. She used to decide if people were well enough to go home and look after themselves.

    She said

Sad situation but sometimes the media does not paint the whole picture.

No, but I did get to keep my sidewalk chalk as it won't work on shinny surfaces! I've still got some of Gary's stuff.

That's because the Brits don't want to wipe the asses/arses of their elderly. They'd rather bw on the dole (from what I've read on this forum). So people from other countries step in, those who don't mind wiping sh**, then send money home.

On a personal note, I've a high school classmate who's a nurse in Aberdeen. Her parents now have a better house. Good on her!
