    Are you Adventurous ?

What is the most adventurous/Silly/Daredevilish thing you have ever done.....so far ?

Not the 'Daffney' version of adventure.....travelling to another country and staying in a nice hotel and paying for sex.....but real live or die adventure kinda stuff.

Something that at the time seemed perfectly normal, run of the mill, even now it still seems not a problem. But you realise that it is not the norm and generally nobody else would attempt it......usually.

I shall have to think and maybe some posts here will jog my memory.....

But I would say that mine so far was hanging from the side of a bell47 helicopter, standing on the skid and hanging onto the bubble with the left hand and a lasoo rope with the right hand.

I had found twin buffalo albino calves and wanted to catch one, they were also valuable and I wanted it for a pet and to breed from.

So I landed my chopper, climbed aboard another and off we went.

The pilot tried to get me as close as possible to drop the rope around its neck, then i would jump off and pull it to the ground. Weaving between trees and across floddplains, it eventually seemed the rope idea was not gunna work.

I disgarded the rope and told the pilot to get me up beside its neck and i would jump on it, grab the horns and wrestle it to the ground.

The pilots positioning was not ideal each time, he thought beside the shoulder was fine, i wanted above the neck so i could land straight close behind the horns first go....only had one go.

that did not work so next go round he got me beside it, I grabbed its tail and jumped off. the idea here is to swing the tail around sharply and you 'throw' the beast off balance, falls over and you grab its hind leg and hold it up so it cannot get up.

Having worked out the grand plan, now the real plan set in. The calf that from above looked at most thigh high was in fact belly high. the ground underneath was pock marked and very rough.

The result was me being dragged behind the beast and eventually landing face first in the dust.

    Did not try again.

This episode ranks slightly in front of the 15 odd meter jump out of a helicopter into a waterfall.

I once travelled on the outside of a train, straddling the buffers of 2 seperate carriages. It was a bet, to do it between 2 stations, which was about 9 miles i think (Rotherham and Sheffield). Absolutely stupid thing to try, and the British Rail police informed me of the fact several times after i was arrested in Sheffield. If i hadn't of been pissed, i probably would have lost balance. Reckon the beer sloshing around in my guts had some sort of stabalising affect. Only did it the once, had nightmares about it for a while afterwards.

Did a "routine" delivery of a generator to a remote Sudanese border post on the Eritrean border with a "guide" and a couple of soldiers as an escort, provided by the Sudanese Army.

On the second night was awakened by explosions and gunfire not too far away .

Looked around and there was just my lowloader with the driver and the two mechanics hiding underneath.
No sign of escort or guide !

Turned out the "guide " had got us lost and we were now in the middle of a minor skirmish in the Eritrean/ Ethiopean war !!

The guide and soldiers had buggered off - not wanting to get involved - and left us to our fate !!

Eritrean troops stormed into our campsite and were a bit nasty but luckily I had just finished building a refugee camp at Asmara on the Eritrean side of the front line a month before for the UNHCR and could just about mumble a few words of Amharic! .
After a tense morning we were told to stay where we were while they checked with their HQ.

2 days of abject fear with bullets whistling around , grovelling in a hole we dug under the flatbed, with only rather suspect water and cold rice to live on, we were escorted back to the Sudanese Border - without the generator!!!

Quite enough danger and adventure for my Mums' little boy I can assure you !

    PS

On our return to Khartoum all was revealed!
Our designated guide had a wedding to go to so he sent his son instead - after all the chap knew the way 'cos he went once with his dad- 16 years previously when he was 6 years old !!

after 2 months at sea and a days delay getting off a vessel because the helideck was attacking helicopters I stepped ashore in capetown.

first stop was a hotel where the company was putting some cash on the bar for the blokes getting off and most of them were heading to europe that night , but I was flying to singapore the next day.

after getting agutful I was keen to go for a bit of an explore , so I went to an atm and got the maximum rand it would give me and hailed a taxi and asked him to take me to a brothel. we went to about 3 places but it seemed that as it was a sunday they were not open - wtf -so I got him to drop me back in town.

I found a pub and after a couple was told they had to close , but I was welcome to keep drinking out the back where they had a bar and a pool table - I was drinking out there with some of the locals and a few chinese ships crew - I had bought this woman who was wearing thigh length boots a couple of drinks , she was a bit rough but I didn't really give a shit. I was in the lav and she came in and pulled out a crack pipe and started toking on it. So I thought wtf I would give it a go - then she suggested we went and got some more - no worries

we got in this taxi and headed out of town then into some tenements and the taxi driver realised what was going on and said he would not charge for the taxi fare if he was given some. ok . finally after a couple of stops the woman got back in the car and slipped the stash down the side of a boot and we headed back out to civilisation - just at the edge 2 coppers wielding mp5s stepped out and stopped the cab - ah fcuk - I jumped out and started waving my passport at them hoping it would serve as a decent distraction , and after a quick look at it and a warning about how bad the area I was in was they sent us on our way.

you live and learn , though I still manage to do some stupid stuff when pissed up in strange countries.

No, I'm not adventurous. Depends on how you define it.

In me younger years, I was more adventurous.

Now I sit and oberserve life and I'm quite content with that.

Thru' some bizarre farce involving my mangled Spanish and ex-Naval career, combined with a pissed up paranoid Bolivian, I managed to get detained as a Chilean Naval spy in Copacabana, Bolivia, during the annual Fiesta. Doubly bizarre when you consider Bolivia is a landlocked nation- it's only water frontage is Lake Titicaca.

Bought a motorcycle and headed south from Toronto in the dead of winter. Could not get further than the Panama Canal. Turned around and went back.

As 3rd mate (had to do catering officer duties at that time) I once took chips off the lunch time menu on a BP oil tanker and replaced them with mashed potatoes.

When I was a long-haired hippy and extreme traveller at the age of 21, I entered Uganda in the spring of 1980.

Idi Amin had fled the country about a year ago, but, the Tanzanian Army that had "liberated" the country were still there.
I was on my own and never saw another long-nose for the month that I travelled around the country.

Best experience: Staying with pygmies for a week.

Worst experience: Being surrounded by five drunken Tanzanian soldiers, poking me with their gun barrels.

    yes sir.

but i also just recalled that as kids we used to boogie board down the flooded storm drains after a big storm.....

and we would make a great big fire in the incinerator and then throw in a couple of aerosol cans to watch them explode.

and we used to play 'gutter boy', an inane game where one of use would lie completely still in the gutter by the side of the road, with a bicycle laying next to use, sometimes red sauce all over the place for effect and wait till a car stopped to see if we were ok, whereupon we'd jump up and yell gutter boy gutter boy....

was dead funny to us, an ambulance van stopped, and the burly driver caught me mate, dragged him home by the ear and made him explain it to his parents.

    end of game.

You are right, sounds quite normal for 17 year olds, but 27?
