Sacramentan buys old vinyl 45s, finds out they were his mom's

The lick-on label was unmistakable. Paul Campfield was reading his mother's name and the address of his childhood San Lorenzo home.
And it meant the old records he picked up for $2 at a Sutter Creek antique shop had once belonged to her, although she died in Redding in 1979.
    What are the chances?
The 68-year-old Sacramento man never knew what came of his record collection owned by his mother, May O. Rainey. He simply remembered how they fit into slots in a compartment beneath the oak RCA Victor console with the automatic turntable.
"It's just a thrill, a genuine thrill," said Campfield, a retired engineering technician. "I think my mother is still with me."
It was just the two of them – a mom and 4-year-old son who left Redding for an Alameda housing project in 1944 when his mother got a job as a secretary for a naval officer.
Campfield remembers when she brought home his soon-to-be stepfather, Fred Rainey, a World War II veteran with a penchant for double-breasted suits whom she'd met at a church dance.
"Mom introduced us and he put out his hand and my hand was swallowed up in his," Campfield recalled.
The couple wed in 1946 and moved to the Bay Area town of San Lorenzo. It was there Campfield remembers music tinkling throughout the house.
The couple would dance from the kitchen to the living room and back into the kitchen, swinging the jitterbug, waltzing, or bopping to that new-fangled rock 'n' roll.
"Fred was a real romantic and he loved to wine and dine her," Campfield said. "Once a month, they would go out to dinner and go dancing."
The two belonged to a big-band-era dance hall called the Merry Mixers, and members would bring records to play there, Campfield said. Members labeled the records to make sure they were returned.
The couple moved to Redding in the early 1960s after Rainey was transferred by Bank of America, Campfield said. They kept dancing until Campfield's mother died of cancer at age 59 in 1979. Rainey died two decades later.
Campfield has thought of his mother regularly these last 30 years. She pops into his head when he hears certain songs, dances the waltz, or eats a chocolate divinity.
He bought an old-style record player from JC Penney a few years back, and earlier this summer, popped into Old Hotel Antiques where he picked up a dozen vinyl 45s.
This week, he pulled them out of the clear plastic bag and that's when he noticed his mother's block-lettered address label on "That is Rock and Roll" by the Coasters. It was on the Freddy Cannon record, and the Elvis Presley one, too. It looked like there once were labels on the Lloyd Price, Alvin Tyler and Fats Domino records as well.
"It's really something," said Merrianne Giannini, a clerk at the antique store, who guesses the records came from Denio's in Roseville.
"There's a reason for this," Campfield said. "I don't really believe in ghosts, but who knows."

easier said than done.. he is 3000 miles from where the records were first given up and he moved and they followed him in a sense... Quite a remarkable coincidence by any definition...

    Yes

he is 3000 miles from where the records were first given up and he moved and they followed him in a sense
    which is why it's

    Quite a remarkable coincidence
It's unlikely but not impossible. What's so odd about that?

So the more likely explanation is that the records were guided by some supernatural force to a store that he was similarly compelled to visit and make a purchase from??

Synchronicity- Jung coined the term, and Arthur Koestler thought there was something to it. "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio. . ."

^ more likely.... but then one has to have the ability of abstract thought and be open minded to more possibilities than just ones own sense of ignorance, skepticism and cynicism to accept that line of thinking..

It requires dropping ones arrogance that we are the center of this or any other universe and accept that there are forces larger than us lowly humans that may apply..Very difficult for many here to reason with...

Yes, and that's exactly what it is, a 'remarkable coincidence' - and only so because we ascribe meaning to several unrelated events that happened to coincide in a manner that we ascribe meaning to.

No different than seeing faces or sheep in clouds.

    Coincidence or what ?

When I was living in Cairo I was taking assignments in Iraq , Algeria ,Iran, Chad, Ethiopia and CAR- This was when I was into heavy plant and afterwards in insurance.
The easiest place to get visas for these godforsaken places was in Athens and the flights were good out of there as well.

    Nice!
I love Athens and it meant I would always have a couple of days there on the way out and a couple of days or more R & R on the way back .

In Athens the main tourist area is in the old centre called the Plakka - full of good bars , cafes and restaurants.

My favourite was the Mavros bistro , right in the centre .

    Coincidence or what ?

9 times out of 10 when I was sitting at my usual table out front I would see someone I knew!
From work, UK, School etc etc

The best was when I was returning from CAR and had persuaded an 'old flame' (FB) to fly out and have a week in Athens ( on my expenses of course) and we were at Mavros soaking up the sun.( and vino collapso with ouzo chasers) and I told her that I always seemed to see people I know when I sat there.

    She didn't believe me .

Within 30 mins there was a HEY! from a passing couple of tourists !!
    Bloody Hell!
It was an old mate that I had seen about 5 years previously, with his wife on holiday - but what really made my lady gobsmacked was when he said " I didn't know you two were still together !" and his wife was all over my lady !

I and my FB were an "item" at a youth club nearly 35 years before and so were they !

    Coincidence or fate ??

No idea but really weird !

Quite. Some kind of narcissistic belief that the universe revolves around humans explains the need to explain randomness in terms of human ends. People think that it can't be random, there must be some greater force precisely because they think the universe operates according to a human sense of meaning. It doesn't. The universe doesn't care about you. It's just a coincidence.

^hmmmm.... not very enlightened perspective that one...or most of the others either I'm afraid...I'm intrigued to see the direction this went...Rather disappointing but predictable I'm afraid....No one so far has suggested the fact that maybe he has some other agenda and actually already had the collection and for the purposes of notoriety then just presented it as the one he purchased.. quite the tunnel vision perspective it seems.. Just another possibility thrown out for consideration..

    Nice story Happy...

Other than poorly worded sentences and a use of smilies which a 12-year old girl would consider excessive, do you have anything to add to this insignificant story? You introduced it by saying "This is pretty though provoking coincidence..." so what thoughts (I presume that's what you meant) did it provoke in you?

San Lorenzo is an EASt Bay town south of Oakland. Redding is further north but only a few hours by car or bike. Sutter Creek is a great little town in the Sierras (Sutter's Mill, Gold Rush, ring any bells?) With Sutter Creek as center. I put the whole group of cities within a 100 - 200 mile radius.

Still a great find! but Fate? I've often come across old & rare bike parts I sold several years later at swap meets as far south as the rose bowl flea market. Once found the crumpled and cruted license plate of my first panhead in this dudes "surplus" store.

Interesting junk shop. Dude was called Jungle George, seems he spent an inordinate amount of time alone in the Jungles of Vietnam during that fiasco, Had a hole slew of these hand-held dynamo-type triggering devices (whatever you called 'em, open, twist, boom!) plate was at the botom of the box, I tossed it back in

Fate? Nah. Just another lucky coincedence. Lucky guy; he is the one person on the planet that could find THAT much joy from a stack of scratchy old 45s.

Kinda what I was thinking. This story, presuming it's true, is a nice one and quite touching in its own way.

But ascribing anything more to it than random happenstance is a bit like the modern equivalent of early humans sitting around a campfire trying to appease the angry god that's hurling lightning bolts down from the heavens.

The odds of winning a lottery are very, very small.
But, coincidently, every week there's people out there that do.

My bad, it wasn't clear in the article and I understood it to be "Reading" Pennsylvania as I have 2 young distractions here..

still and I was wondering to those who have typically mindless comments to make like Dan do they have anything of value to contribute or just their mindless personal comments.....

Kudos for pointing out the obvious to the gullible -- here, have a green!

Seriously, it amazes me that people advocating the fairy tales of a 'superior force' fail to understand that they are just pushing and confirming that they themselves consider themselves to be the center of the universe, instead of accepting the randomness and uncaring nature of the universe...

There's some seriously naïve and gullible people on this planet -- or maybe, as you stipulated, he's just a 10 year old kid (albeit most 10 year olds seem smarter).

Judging by DF's cacophony of emoticons 'thrown' at you, I'd more likely theorize that he's retarded, than infantile - of course, YMMV.

How come DF is back here? He's the most despised, loathed and hated poster on TD. The [at][at][at][at] has shown his cuntishness over and over again, I can't believe he's got the brass neck to come here after the last few times he's spewed his brain-dead crap across the forum. The man is obviously mentally ill. Those of you who think I'm exaggerating - give it 7 days and see where he goes.

    But wait, it gets better...

In one of his first posts back he made some half-arsed, qualified, 'apology' to Loy Toy. The type of dribble that only this clown would lack the self-awareness to even think about proffering as an apology.

He then had a go at LT for not accepting it!
