CANBERRA, Australia - When a dark intruder smashed through his bedroom window and repeatedly bounced on his bed, Beat Ettlin at first was relieved to discover it was a kangaroo.
"My initial thought when I was half awake was, 'It's a lunatic ninja coming through the window,'" the 42-year-old told The Associated Press on Monday. "It seems about as likely as a kangaroo breaking in."
But his relief was short-lived. As Ettlin cowered beneath the sheets with his wife and 9-year-old daughter at 2 a.m. Sunday, the frantic kangaroo bounded into the bedroom of his 10-year-old son, Leighton Beman, who screamed, "There's a 'roo in my room!"

Is there a hunting season on kangaroos or are they protected or just what is their status.
I Got friends with a couple of Aussie Troops in Nam and we did a bit of partying and they invited me to their houses when ever I could get there and we would go Big Red hunting and they told me there were good to BBQ, but I have lost that address book that I put their address's in years ago, but the way they talked it was legal to shoot one.

It depends on the area and which breed is a problem/ or over populated! Most farms have a quota per year on what breed the can cull and how many. Feral cats and goats are where the fun is!

The thing is that kangaroos, like most animals need water regularly, if not daily. So the climate in a lot of areas of Australia restricted the population of kangaroos and wallabies in a lot of places. Then the cattle farmers came along and put down bores to water the cattle. The kangaroo population exploded. Estimates are that there are more kangaroos in Australia now than the was before the white man came. And of course they do compete with cattle for natural fodder. But they can also cause a lot of damage in cropping areas.

However, many species of kangaroos and wallabies that are no threat to mans enterprise have been made extinct through hunting and habitat change. But on the whole, the man made explosion in kangaroo numbers has turned the more common species into a pest that needs to be kept under control through culling.

The government regulates this culling by strictly managing professional kangaroo shooters and imposing quotas on specific species of roos. Many species are totally protected.

Before white man came to Oz, there were no hoofed animals here, Kangaroos have a soft foot and the grasses in the more arid parts evolved to cope with soft footed animals only. But with the introduction of hard footed hoofed animals like cattle and sheep the natural grasslands started to deteriorate and erosion became a problem.

Ironically, kangaroos and wallabies (which are adapted to this environment) can produce about ten times the weight of meat per acre than a sheep or cow, and they dont damage the natural grasslands because of their soft feet. Plus, roo meat is lean and very low in cholesterol. Its certainly a far more efficient, healthy and environmentally friendly source of animal protein than the traditional beef and lamb.
But roo meat hasnt caught on in Australia or elsewhere because roo meat doesn't taste as good to the western palate as cultivated beef or lamb. And also the incorrect perception that kangaroos as a whole need protection. In fact the USA has gone so far as to ban the import of all kangaroo products. So, only a very small cut of the annual authorized kangaroo cull is utilized for human consumption either in Australia or for export. Some is used for pet food, and the rest is left to rot in the field where it falls.

I love to eat roo meat. I think that the difficulty in "farming" them is that they are bloody hard to control. You cant heard them like sheep or cattle. Also its very expensive to build fences good enough to keep them in.

The actually make crap dog food, because the "fat" content of the meat is too low for dogs.

It is also better for the environment as kangaroos, due to their different intestinal system, do not fart as much as cows on a per Kg of edible flesh basis.

(chickens are even greener - by a factor of 10 - as they barely fart at all)

I find it quite tasty, although not as nice as beef due it being a bit drier with lower fat content. I have read however that it is not aways a healthy option due to parasites that live in the roo's flesh and which often survive the cooking progress due to roo often being served rare or medium rare (due to the dryness of the meat I think).

Kangaroo fillet steak is on the menu in most pubs and restaurants in Oz.
It has to be cooked quickly, then it's moist and tender. Too long on the grill and it dries out.
