    Homesick?

It's been a few years now since i last put my feet on the lands of my ancestors. Today i am overwhelmed with an urge to do just that. To plant my feet onto the soil that gave me the inner glow of belonging. I haven't felt this way for many years, but when the homesickness hits, it's devastating. I am content where i am, and there is no reason i can think of as to why the homesickness kicks in. Then i start to think about every footstep i've made, and how i felt when my whole being was in tune with the very ground i was walking on, and that that same ground was the reason for me being. But now i am a stranger in a strangers land, and the steps i make do not feel quite the same. I know this is a temporary feeling, but as i said, it hurts like hell when it kicks in. Wait till tomorrow? Anybody else get homesick, or am i just a girly?

I have spent so much time in so many places that I do get nostalgic for times and certain people, but not places as I look back thru my life.
I know where I was born and spent my early years but I have no place to really call home except where I am at this time.
    Does that make any sense?

It's working the other way around for me. After just one month in Thailand i did not want to go back to UK. Only 6 weeks until i get back. Staying there this time.

If the ground you are talking about is the Britannia Stadium, you are not missing much. It's a bit soulless that place.

You can never 'go home' again... It's never the same... The memories far outweigh the reality...

BTW, love the Floyd reference... I saw their last tour show 3 times in '94...

Just wondered... I'm a similar age & don't really ever feel overly homesick. Did look at going back a few times, but never go around to it... I've become a little too Asian in my thinking, of late...

Second time i've felt like this. Last time i got a three month open ticket back to Madchester. Only stuck it out for 10 days and hoofed it back here as quick as i could. Guess thats what i mean though. It is a shock feeling homesick.

Visiting and living here are entirely different. In my experience 95% don't cut it unless they have the umbilical of company money and don't have to think for themselves.
You'll do well to last 6 months, especially on Samui, nest of vipers as it is.
Good luck anyway, just stay clear of investing any money there. Lot of con-men about.

I fear you may have missed the real good times here though, things are a lot worse now than when I arrived 9 years ago.

I never get homesick, but then again I never stayed in one place long enough to truly call it my 'home'. Home is just where I want to be at the time.

Thanks for the advice. I am fortunate to have a service pension and no debt. I am retiring to enjoy the weather, fresh air and exercise, and the relaxed cullture. At 55 I don't really want sit through another english winter and watch the utility companies burning my hard earned. I will avoid the horrors of downtown Chaweng when i find a place to live.

Can you get them fish slices with potato on top and bottom coated in batter and served in an attractive wrapping of last weeks Doncaster Evening News?
And did you sup the pint of Wards's finest?

Only had it once back in Xmas 1990 and I was in Cairns and Xmas was approaching. I'd been feeling shitty after some blood poisoning due to some tropical alien beings living inside me but felt strong enough to go whitewater rafting down the Tully River. After the trip I went delirious and the doctor wanted me hospitalised as I was developing pneumonia. After shitloads of meds and rest I went on a real homesickness downer as I wouldn't pass the medical to do a PADI course and a dirty stinking lowlife rifled my bags when I was off my head on the meds and stole some very sentimental things that usually were always on my person, so I decided to fly home. Mates I were with rallied round me and persuaded me that to be so close to the barrier reef and not see it would be a traversty and I could dive the reef further down the coast when I was OK.

Agreed to stay an extra week and just hang while they were doing their dive course. Started drinking in Johnny's Blues Bar every night to help recuperate and I broke the back of the home sickness cos every night was a ball and I also got laid in the swimming pool where my mates were doing their PADI instruction. Check out those little fishies boys!

After that never had it again. Haven't been back to the UK for nearly 10 years now but often get nightmares where I've flown home and been stuck there as the return flight just could never fully take off due to loads of overhead wires! Waking up to find a mosquito breakfasting on me stops the sweats and brings a smile to my face.
