Giles......don't think he will be welcomed back in a hurry

    Thailand Jumped the Shark

Fair play to him. He is not afraid to say what he thinks. Especially now that he is a few thousand miles away.

His book was also pretty graphic in his explanations about he who must not be named.

I don't think a welfare system would ever work here though!!

    Just imagine!!

great link. i imagine wont be long before its blocked to Thailand.

cannot really quote any of it here, but i like some of his thinking, as he is proposing solutions as well as problems.

edit, change that, he is a nutter.

    he wants a socialist state!

    Ha ha.

I agree, I think he has definately been reading too much Marx and Engels recently.

There is a hell of a lot of truth there as well but like you said, best not to risk discussing what points those are.

I can post you a link to the book 'A coup for the rich' if you like. It is a pretty good read.

True, the guy is not afraid to say what he thinks, he obviously got tipped off that he was going to get Shafted for the Lese Majeste laws and got out...who wouldn't 15 years for what?

His old man fought against the Japanese when they invaded Thailand, unlike the rest of them, when they surendered after the long drawn out battle of FOUR HOURS!!

Then his old man was persecuted as a commy and had to flee the country...while the pigs took over the trough!

I am by no means a communist, but I support him in his views about free speech, and pretty much what he says, He even goes along with the democratic rights that Thaksin was ELECTED, which is pretty open minded for a so caled "communist", he supports the rural Thais, is against these money grabbing vermin who control everything. Good luck to him, I hope he finally can come back here without fear of being a scapegoat!

And as far as that "Coup for the Rich" that was pretty mild, go and do a google on the "Red Manifesto" (I posted the English text here and it was blanked within seconds) but he has took it to a new level..he can not come back here.

If you can't find it, I have a copy both in Thai and English (It makes good reading..but he will get at least 15 years for that!)..my missus couldn't believe he actually said this, but to the few Thais I have shown it to, they actually agree...

    Interesting read that.

I think that the sooner the Reds (looks like this name is sticking everywhere!) start to move away from this association with Taksin, the better.

You cannot really argue with much of the content of what he has written. Although as I said earlier, I can't imagine there ever been a welfare system in Thailand and after seeing the mess that the UK government has made of Britain's I don't think it would work at all here. Although everyone would like to see more available for the elderly, sick e.t.c.

One thing I have noticed where I live has been the change of attitude recently between the two main class systems. There has definately been a change in the way the middle class, richer Thai's who eat around my area in Bangkok are treating the mostly issarn workers at the places that I go to eat and drink.

so what is the alternative ? Thailand should go from what it is now to a Vietnam like regime or even Laos or Burma ? oh yeah, that would work

Thai are really spoiled, they have everything and they keep complaining

Do you really expect him to be welcomed back? Exiled like the many decent scholars and statesman....that portray a truer vision. The powers to be don't need any of that.

Why we consider that any such Western political ideals go off well in Asia is beyond me.

Why would you say it's a load of bollocks? He makes some very valid points, and the basis of his criticism is pretty much spot on.

I do however think he went a bit overboard wanting a republic..(signed his death warrant there no doubt) I see nothing at all wrong with keeping the monarchy, only keeping them WELL out of poitics, if at all possible.

The big problem here is Patronage, the self serving governments will support and give power to anyone or anything that ultimately brings the biscuits back to them.
You could in theory have a figurehead as a symbol of the country, but the first new government could grant a whole load of extra powers overidding the constitution, as they so wildly do, in their self interests.

It's not really the Monarchy that is the issue, I believe it is the rotten politicians and the patronage system.

If you go down to basic rural village level, when they have a Tambon, everyone puts in a penny or two...then the bastards read out everyones name and HOW MUCH they chipped in, you can see the need to chip in eh..loss of face...Somchai put in 5 baht more than me...that tight ass only put in 50 baht..etc. etc.. they place so much on face..and it's ingrained!

It reads like a 6th Form Communist diatribe. Hardly realistic.

I agree - although I don't necessarily agree with everything he says, he makes some very interesting points on subjects most Thais are too timid to discuss in public. I particularly found his views on the Crown Property bureau and the sufficiency theory interesting - not that I agree with him on these subjects - as that would be breaking the law.......
Any error in tact, fact or spelling is purely due to transmissional errors...
