    Thai logic ????

Hi , I booked into a guest house last Sunday evening in Ban Saen ,, Monday morning 10.00 am walked to the beach and sat down on a deck chair which was in a block that had 20 tables and 6 deck chairs at each table ,, been there 5 minutes when this Thai woman came to me and asked how many chairs i want to pay for ,, i looked round as you do ,, yes i am on my own so i say 1 chair ,, she say can not 1 chair ,, so i get up and walk to the next block of tables and deck chairs and ask how much 1 chair ,, his reply 30 Bht ,, i went there for 4 days ,, ok he only made 120 Bht from the deck chair but i also bought food and drinks from him plus i had 2 foot massages which he got a little from . In those 4 days there were no more than a dozen people all day in both of the blocks ,, i can under stand her logic at week-ends as it gets very busy but week days ?? Her loss the other guys gain

    Billy no mates?

Seriously though, Thais pride themselves on this kind of thing and label it as "Thainess", of course, guys like you and me call it "idiocy".

I've talked about my 'flat head theory' before but will mention it again for anyone who missed it last time.

As big nose honkys we are blessed with the gift of logic and common sense. I believe that we keep this logic and sense in the back of our heads which gives us the rounded style cranium which I hope you are checking right now. (please feel the back of your head)

Now if we move along to a Thai person who seems to be lacking in this 'logic' and 'comon sense' you will find that the back of their head is completely flat. (please call over your girlfriend or wife and lovingly pretend to be affectionate whilst secretly feeling the back of her head.) Hence they are missing the much needed logic part of the brain.

By now if you've followed all the steps correctly my theory should already be proved.

She just tried to make some money, that's it. If someone is stupid enough to pay for more chair even he comes alone so... good for her.

I dunno. I rather like sitting in the shade on those chairs and watching all the goings on. Food and drinks only a hand wave away. Only thing you have to do for yourself is take a piss.

Just when we needed the Thai perspective to chime in and prove the theory, you arrive.
Thanks for describing the Thai mentality that it is better to cheat for more profit than enter into a mutually agreeable transaction that benefits both parties.

Having been married to a Thai for 14 years and having dealt with Thais in various different circumstances over the years I have come to the conclusion that the best way to manage them is to consider them all a bunch of cheats, liars and idiots, --- but to be polite and courteous about it. They really think they are the master race, so you got to let them think that to get on with them.

Ok she tried to make extra money and failed, but if it wasn't for that other ingenious Thai invention, face, once you started to move she could have given you a single chair for the cost of a single chair...with the statutory smile.

I doubt it even occurred to the chair vendor lady that offering a fair deal to a farang tourist could be in her own best financial interests.
She just saw a fat farang pigeon ready to be plucked and tried on a scam which happened to fail this time round. Farangs are a lower class of human so its no real loss of face to see him walk away.

I was once told there's no word for "logic" in Thai, it doesn't translate. Don't know if that's true?

Would make it difficult to watch Star Trek... always an upside I suppose.

Get used to it and just laugh at the retardedness of it all.

When you watch Fawlty Towers, do you laugh, or be in a pain trying to figure out why the little monkey waiter is doing everything in a completely retarded manner?

Laugh, and sit back and enjoy the fact that you are a lot, and I mean a lot smarter than them.

Enjoy! (It's a laugh a minute once you've settled here.)

There's probably a more precise word, but het pon = rational...mai mi het pon = illogical/irrational.
