Are any of you members of an "expat club" ?

For example, I did a bit of work alongside a couple of guys who were members of the Pattaya Expats Club (PEC) and they would meet each saturday morning at the crummy and dusty Green Bottle Restaurant on Beach Road.

At one of the meetings a guy was attempting to be funny onstage to the members at 11am while I would think most of them were too hungover to understand the 'humour' of a man re-reading a load of Dave Allen jokes in a Norwich accent. Imagine a guy on stage, his mic often feeding back, him not being loud enough, and the shuffling and murmuring of a restless and unamused crowd. And, his jokes not being in the least bit funny.

Great stuff I thought, what's next? The next was a whip round for a herd of sick buffaloes in Huay yai, organised by the expat wives commitee, which was quite thoughtful.

Conversations were a bit tedious, I told 18 different people how I ended up in Thailand, told 7 my marriage story, and got 6 'how I got to Thailand' stories and 3 'how I divorced my farang wife' stories in return. As well as all that I heard dozens of reasons why western women are unsuitable, loads of stories about how Pattaya is an expanding family resort, got blinded by statistics from a guy who assumed everyone was an investment banker, got advised to 'get into property' by a few others (huh if only they knew) and was told 8 times how to get freebies fromn the girls along Walking Street at 3am.

Anyone ever been tempted to become a member of an expat club?

Or rather, why would you want to become a member of an expat club?

There is talk of starting one here in Korat. I'm really not interested in a "club", but I wouldn't mind socializing now and then. (I'm a recluse at heart, but seeing a real live 'expat' now and then wouldn't hurt me much.)

On the other hand, some of the expats who live here are very keen to start such an organization with regular meetings, rules and all that crap.

I'm not sure what their motivation is.

In any event, the first meeting is this Thursday, June 1st, at the Pasinee Restaurant.

Expat clubs aint for me, foking morons that don't even speak Thai telling me about Thailand, I can see it if they are lonely and want to make new friends, but fok me if they are lonely then the odds are they are social rejects anyway and nobody likes them anyway, I think the majority use these things for busines/scamming type things, ie to meet a rich sucker and defraud them, all a load of bolloxs to my mind, I meet to many people each day so I don't want to meet more, and I am foked if I want them phoning me up to help settle disputes because they don't speak the lingo, thats probably why I don't bother answering my phone most of the time

^^Two things that are fucking spot on!!! Then I tell them I'm half and they wanna fall thru a fucking hole in the floor.

One guy rang me up after I'd known him a week asking me to speak to the Police because he'd hit someone in Soi 6. I hung up, switched off for two days and didn't hear from him again.

Some of you would say "You unhelpful bastard", but he was a stupid **** anyway.

I would have done the same Pat -Although I probably wouldn't have just hung up - I would have made a train noise and said, 'oops going into a tu-'

When in LOS I cross the street to avoid other farangs....Who wants to sit and hear someone bang on about how much they miss Wall's sausages....

I probably won't join an expat club in Thailand. The exception to the rule being a member of the VFW or Masons. Both organizations committed to helping the needy by raising funds for education, medical care, bicycles for kids, walkers or canes for the Thai amputees. The VFW folk also like to imbibe a few brewskies but that's OK.
