My bill this month was 3 times the amount of last month.

I pay the governmet rates, but have been told by my landlord that costs for electricity bills have been practiacally doulbled!

Am I being taken for a ride, or os this the current trend???

Last month in the old apartment was 80 something.

For my new apartment, I have no clue because I just moved in last weekend. I don't know how much a unit costs yet.

I agree with MrsQ - jump on his back, slap his arse and shout , 'Come on, gidee up, gidee up'. If you're lucky you'll get all the way to the 7-11 before he shakes you off....I do the same to my postman and most days I get half way to work....I have to give him a lump of sugar afterwards, but it's worth it.

Can't help on the leccy I'm 'fraid - 'cept to say that whatever your bill is mine is going to be an awful lot more.

My leccy bill doubled last month when the outlaws came to stay and it got fokking hot. Up to 1,900B for the month (two A/C rooms in a 3-bed house).

The electricity price in Thailand has a fixed part and a variable part.
The variable part keeps increasing because of the oil price but in the last 4 years it meant an overall increase of about 50%.
Well, my bill also doubled the last few months, but because of the heat and the aircon, not because of the kwh price...

I've just aquired a lodger, so it will be more expensive. Luckily his rent will more than cover it.

yes my bill has gone up quite dramatically in the last couple of months - the heat and humidity- and i get mine direct from the company - no landlord in between

First 150 units: 1.8047 baht per unit
Next 250 units: 2.7781 baht per unit
All other units: 2.9780 baht per unit
Standing Charge: 40.9 baht
Add them all up = sub-total (1)

Now calculate the "Fuel tax", currently 0.7584 baht per unit. You should see this on the bill as "Ft 0.7584"
Call this sub-total (2)

Add the two sub-totals together and then add 7% VAT.
The result is what you should pay.

eg. 411 units:

150 * 1.8047 = 270.705 baht
250 * 2.7781 = 694.525 baht
11 * 2.9780 = 32.758 baht
Service charge = 40.9 baht
------------------------------
Sub Total (1) = 1038.888 baht

Fuel tax factor * units = 0.7584 * 411 = 311.7024 baht
------------------------------
Sub Total (2) = 311.7024 baht (Fuel Tax)

Add sub-totals (1) and (2) = 1350.5904 baht
Finally, 7% VAT = 94.541328 baht
------------------------------
Total = 1445.13 baht

Half the time my electricity bill is exactly the same as I have calculated. The other times, it has been one satang under.

The Fuel Tax factor has trebled in the last 2 years, but only accounts for a few hundred baht. I have been using the same "per unit" costs since the end of 2002, and they haven't changed, neither has the VAT rate. So I think you're being screwed.

Of course, you should really find your meter and see the bill. And you should also turn everything off in your house/apartment and then go see if the meter is still going round!

I recently moved from my condo, where I paid an average of 800 baht a month with one ac in the bedroom used.

In my new house I just about keeled over when I got the first bill at 2300, also only use the ac in the bedroom.

Last month was about the same...yesterday had the electricity people here to check the wiring etc...they assured me that everything is ok. ...talked to neighbours on both sides and theirs is about the same...

and heres me thinking it would be cheaper to live in the boondocks

There is an extra 20% tax when you power bill is too high. My landlord bill is about 20,000 baht in the house next to mine.

The FT variable on ones bill play$ a pretty hefty role in the bottom line figure and the now over 70 bucks for a barrel of crude...

The figures I used in my calculation above are from last month's bill, so any increase in rates would have had to come after 19th April.

Try to find out where your meter is and check it. Of course, if your landlord is cheating you, he'll come up with some story as to why you can't look at it.

The FT used to account for about 14% of the total bill. Now that the FT rate has gone up to 0.7584baht/unit, it accounts for about 22% of the bill.
