    Confused Thaiophiles

With regard to standard of living.

Confused Thaiophile 1 - Bangkok Phil
On his website he claims that the main reason he lives in Thailand because he has a better standard of living here. This is despite the fact that he quit England in his early/mid twenties, spent the next decade or so jumping from low paid TEFL job to low paid TEFL job whilst living in single room rented accommodation then a shanty house, and only now he had reached middle age has he found ways to earn a comfortable living. So he is comparing what with what exactly?

    Confused thaiophile 2 - Raphael28
January 2006 "I can achieve a much better standard of living in Thailand than in the US"
April 2006- "I can achieve a much better standard of living in the US than in Thailand"
Has she broken her rose-tinted specs, shaken off the Thaiophile virus, or just misses good old home too much?

It is a lot easier to make money in your home country unless you are in a specialised field, ie oil/gas etc, to come here and expect to make good money after a 6 week course is ridiculous, the ads all say 30k baht per month, but a lot of them believe that they deserve more because they concerntrated on their 6 week course, anyway my 3 month brain surgery course seems to be going fine and my tutor gave me an A+, now he says I got to get some patients to try out my newly learnt skills on, any takers ?

You know what's coming, don't you?

Seriously, Smeg, we've done this topic over and over and neither you, I or anyone else has anything new to say about it so why don't you give it a rest and talk about something - anything - else?
The sleep of reason brings forth monsters.

yes but it is all relative, teachers in most countries are not top wage earners, they are just middle class, ie they work till they are 65 and then retire, they don't get rich, how much does mcdonalds pay it's staff here? 30pence per hour?

One of my thai friends, a uni grad, earn 8000 baht per month for 50 hours per week in an office. The company has 5 other staff earning the same, and the owner drives two Mercedes....

yes, but they probably get free burgers so they are really on a much better deal than the average Tefler here.

I wonder what would become of Bangkok Phil had he not walked out on the UK. It seems that he is itching to move back there, and the highlight of his year seems to be his holidays back there, but he has no way of going back, as his life support system is totally dependant on Thailand.

He admitted online last year that he was looking at The Birmingham Post, and said that he'd actually take a paycut if he took one of the ok-ish 12k per year jobs advertised in it. What was it, a cleaning job?!?! Bizarre.

    Dog:

that's really my point with the 60K wage for a teacher - it's a bit excessive for sure compared with the average but it's all a case of the owners milking it from the company and paying the staff fuck all.

Is it any wonder I didn't give a toss about my joke job here and ended up getting fired - like what do these chimps expect of someone working for that wage?

That sounds very bizarre indeed - I heard he wanted to go to Spain - wonder how far the Baht goes there?

I normally would not say anything about teaching on this forum. Please got to ajarn.com for further discussion.

Bear, in mind that a few of us ain't TEFLers.

I really enjoy my profession plus making a few baht per month.

You are the most boring poster I've ever read.

Even though I read you very briefly.

    You are the most boring.

Don't you have anything better to do?

You complain - then return - then you post.

I see you as a loner who sits in a small bed-sit with a computer....alone....posting.....

10k usd per month is the base rate if you are in an office 5 days a week that goes up to 25k usd per month for some positions. With the added tax benefits there are very good reasons to be working in asia and russia - unless of course you are inclined to miss your mum.

Baldrick, my post refers to people living in Thailand and getting jobs in Thailand, you wont get the full expat package if you already here.

Teaching in the Uk don't seem that good.

<H1 class=black24>Misses quit to be cleaners

    By JOHN COLES

TWO sisters have quit their &#163;25,000-a-year jobs as teachers — because they are better off as Mrs Mopps.
Classroom veterans Kirsty and Fiona Innes made a clean break because they were fed up with yob pupils.
The pair boasted 14 years’ teaching experience between them — but reckon giving their careers the brush-off was the best thing they have ever done.
Mum-of-two Kirsty, 34, who taught languages at Culverhay Secondary in Bath, said yesterday: “We left because behaviour is getting gradually worse in our schools.
“We were living hellish lives and dreaded going to work.”
She also gave the Government a bucketload over increasing paperwork.
Fiona, 27, who taught design and technology at Clarendon College in Trowbridge, Wilts, said of their booming firm Aardvark Cleaning Services: “We have risked everything to set this up but so far it’s been worth it.”
Andy Woolley, of the National Union of Teachers, claimed half of new teachers quit.
He said: “The workload continues to drive many away.”

Whether you like Phil or not, and not knowing his previous situation, I think that in general he did well for himself. You must remember that it takes time and a learning of your surroundings before you can move forward. I agree with another poster, that he talked of moving to Spain when time to retire. Good on him!

I'm really surprised that she's still sticking it out in Thailand. This poor and impressionable ex-Brit can't seem to figure out her place in life.

I always look around me for someone who I can discuss

as long as I can make out that their living conditions are worse than mine!

that is the most important thing; if they are doing better than me, then I would have to say "gosh, that Thaiophile is doing very well and enjoying life"....we can't have that, can we?

Poor Bkk Phil, what an example...but who cares? One, or several, examples does not prove any point, they merely show how some people live.

I am sure there are lots of TEFLers out there who are enjoying their lives and wish to continue living in Thailand. I am also sure there are lots who will pack it in some time.

What is important is not how other people live, and how they cope, but how you yourself do this. Look inward and either despair or rejoice.
