    I despise banks

Im not sure if this is in the right place as it might turn out to be a rant.

    Halifax bank in the UK.
Ive had so much hassle with this lot over the last couple of months its untrue. Money was going into my account quite regularly and I could draw money out no problems. One day I went and couldnt get any money out "Transaction cancelled contact bank" so I did. It was a security measure as I has "forgot" to inform them that I was leaving the UK to come back to Thailand, I dont know where it states you have to do this on their site but they made a right fuss about it. Loads of questions like how long are you there for etc which is none of their fucking business, my card, as advertised, can be used worldwide. Fair enough I can go with the security angle of it being used abroad etc so I said I'll be here for a year to cover myself for a while.

A week later I go to the bank and again I cant take any money out with the same "transaction cancelled" message. Call them again and they say nothings wrong, money is in there and there arent any restrictions on the account, it must be the Thai side with a connection problem. I asked in the Thai bank and they said no its working fine which was verified by some expat dude taking money out the ATM as I left. I drew the conclusion that it must be the card, asked for a new one and got it sent here by my parents. New card in the ATM and everythings fine, I can withdraw cash again.

I went to the bank on Friday with the new 2 month old card and the same "transaction cancelled" message has started to come up. Called them again and they said I must be trying to wthdraw over my balance, nope, Ive tried for way under the balance and got the same bloody message.

HSBC works fine, same card Ive had for years as well as my Nationwide card. I thought stuff it Ill move the money to one of the other accounts as the new faster payment system is on the front page of the Halifax website "sorry we cant process faster payments at this time" when I tried to transfer it.

Anyone else here have the same problems with Halifax?

Pretty bad stuff. Don't use Halifax Bank but I've never had problems with international xfers via ATM with my US bank.

Halifax is in Nova Scotia (New Scotland). Could be they just can't stand to part with the money.

Just an update on my bank rant.

    The Nationwide.
Nationwide is usually great, free withdrawls abroad so no poxy £1.50 or £2 charge when you fancy some of your own cash.

Ive just tried to transfer £8.00 from the Nationwide to HSBC to cover a bill shortfall and the fuckers have introduced a new system for doing it. You now need to use a card reader which in the pictures looks similar to a credit card machine the shops use.
Nationwide Building Society - Card reader security - Introduction

Card in the reader enter code blah blah fucking blah and you can do a transfer.

Its ridiculous. To enter my net banking I have to enter
    8 digit customer number
    memorable data
3 random numbers of a 6 digit number

Im transferring £8 not £8,000 to my own bank account albeit with another bank.

    Next it will be

"Please install this webcam and swallow this GPS chip or have it embedded in your skull so we can watch you using the card reader and track your position. This is to prevent fraud just in case someone kidnaps you, holds you hostage and forces you to use the reader against your will. We will then decline the transaction"

^If you convert your Nationwide account to a 'Flex' account, you don't need the new fangled nonsense. It also has the advantage of being just a cash card, so if you lose it here, no-one can swipe the card to buy goods (which is easy given no fucker checks the signature!)

Halifax has left me stranded with no cash twice now plus several other problems.

My father has POA just in case anything needs doing in the UK whilst I am away.

We have had the POA put onto my account 4 times now. It has been removed and changed several times. Resulting in either my father or I not having access to the accounts.

Leaving for Korea, I went to the ATM to get cash out, couldn't get any out, eventually called Halifax to be told aboout overseas withdrawls, even though they know I am based overseas and up to this point have never had any troubles.

Tried to get it changed but none of my security details were correct. Managed to get a tiny bit of info that it was a def a Newcastle postcode they wanted, tried my old apartment (hadn't lived there for 5 years and had mail going to folks house for that time) it was that postcode. My date of birth didn't work, nothing else was right.

Turns out they mixed up my details and my fathers details for security.

Got a new card issued since that card was now fucked (not sure why), had my folks send me my new card.

Two days before going away to the UK on holiday I went to withdraw some cash to pay for things. Didn't work.

Called them up, my new card issued 9 months before didn''t exist on the sytem. It had never been issued. Nothing they could do. My details again were mixed up with my old man's as well.

Complained to a customer service manager. Eventually got 50 quid out of them which barely covered the cost of my phone calls or the interest on the cash advance i had to take from my visa card to cover me for a month.

    Fucking shite bank.

It applies to the Flex account if you have a debit card which I have. I now have a similar problem to my Halifax where it wont let me withdraw cash sometimes so I like to have the debit function.

^Ah, I said 'no' to the debit card for the security reason. Looks like that was a good shout.

Banks think they are above serving the customer. Their policy seems to be to ding you and get as much of your money as possible. They get special laws passed which allow them to do this successfully. The bank is right the customer is wrong.

It takes a lot to make Thai banks look better.

I stopped using British banks several years ago for anything other than offshore Isle of Man and offshore Channel Islands. Terrible service, antiquated methods of doing banking business and outrageously poor transaction times, delays and other such nonsense.

I now use Australian banks for my day to day banking needs. I have a Gold NAB account that does not charge for withdrawals.

Same Problems, Same Bank. So Before I left the last time, I told Halifax, Off to Thailand Be away for three months and I will be using my card. No problem we will attach a record to your Account. Ok , What can go wrong. Had the building gear delivered, went to the ATM. Nothing. Repeated phone calls, Was assured nothing was wrong must be a problem with the Thai system. All Bollcks. Gets better. While I am trying to get money from ATM. My card gets copied. Some bastrd had no trouble in Algeria using my Halifax Card in an ATM. Remember I Notified them I was going to Thailand, I get fcuk all out of an Thailand ATM, While my card is freely in use in another country.

I did get my money back when I returned to the UK. In Thailand I ended up with a cash transfer from the uk. ( Western Union) On the same subject. Here in the UAE. it was annouced today that all cards issued in the UAE would not work in any overseas ATM. That includes banks like HSBC and Lloyds. Owing to the amount of rip offs from ATM's. That could catch on,

Sounds like Thailands policy toward tourists, get as much money as possible. Whether the tourists are enjoying themselves is irrelevant. Scam em with ideallic pictures of dirty beaches and smiling faces. And if they complain .....the Thai is right the Farang is wrong

Australian banks are expensive to wire money from though, right? I have some Aussie customers who always moan about it, so we often dick about with Western Union to get paid.
