911 - Where Were you and What Were You Doing When You Heard the WTC Had Been Attacked

The anniversary date for 911 is almost here. I know it may not be important to non Americans, but this thread is for everyone regardless of where you hail from.

Where were you at and what were you doing when you learned of the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. What were your thoughts or your reaction.

I was eating breakfast and was watching the television. The story about the WTC came on and I knew something was up. I called my good friend that worked for Morgan Stanley Dean Witter on his cell phone and got his voice mail. We never spoke again as he was one of the 10 employees that worked for Morgan Stanley that died that day.

    Your story?

I was walking with a few friend down Sukhumvit Rd between 13 and 15. I remember seeing it on a TV in one of the small bars. I stopped and said "what the fuck?" they carried on like Id just seen my footy team on the telly. When I caught them up they didnt believe me, dragged them into the nearest bar with a TV and jaws were well and truly dropped.

I was living in Thonglor tower at the time, received a phone call telling me that a job i was supposed to be going on later in the day which meant a flight to Japan had been cancelled and to turn on the TV as to the reasons why.

I was staying at Le Meridian in Kuwait. I was working with an American and there was a huge manic by the US embassy there. She was called up every hour and they even put a US marine outside her door for a while.

Actually there were a few demonstrations in Kuwait supporting the attacks on the friday after prayers.

Working in Seoul just got home and having dinner with housemates. It come on the military channel. I thought it was another one of those bad disaster films. I couldn't keep my eyes off it till the Canadian guy who owned the TV shut it off, he'd seen enough.

Driving home having dropped the partner off at work. Bits over the radio as I slid round the roundabouts north of Cairns. Finally got home and switched on the box. Just sat and watched, astonished.

I had returned to the states to finish selling off and storing my possessions so I could finish the move here, I was asleep my son called me from his car on his way to work. I switched on the TV and I have to say my thoughts weren't for the dead, dying and injured. My thoughts immediately went to the way the administration was going use this as an opportunity to do all the shit they've done over the past 7 years. The invasion of countries, the laws restricting civil liberties and rights, the rhetoric and posturing.

In about 30 seconds the whole scenario flooded my mind with a dread of things to come. I began to wonder if the United States would ever recover from the fallout from this event. It wasn't until much later in the day while discussing the event with my son that I began to see how this affected so many. Most US citizens were frightened to their core, and angry. 5000 people dead and GWB began implementing his plans to invade the Middle-East.

I was in England at my parent's house, my mate called me up to tell me there was an attack on the world trade, I told my Dad and we flicked on the TV to see the aftermath of the first airplane, and then it was truly shocking when the second airplane hit. Quite a jaw dropping moment to see that live, the Kennedy assassination of my generation I suppose.

After that was just wondering when the better camera angles would show up because the footage they was showing got a bit boring. And I remember having my suspicions about American involvement about the tragedy even then. To be honest I never felt truly upset about the whole event as much as I have heard so many people say they were. Innocent people die under tragic circumstances everyday due to govt actions and inactions.

When the planes hit I was under general anesthetic in hospital at the time. I had crashed my dirtbike two days earlier and done a double fracture of lower leg.
I had been watching the tv from my bed before my operation and it was just a normal day, when they wheeled me back out to the ward after the op the second plane had just hit and it was live on the tv opposite my bed.
It took me a good thirty minutes to shake off the drowsyness of the anasthetic and was almost like what I was watching was just a bad dream. I'll never forget that 30 minutes, very weird experience.
The following 2 weeks were made quite easy as I had ample distraction from being stuck in a hospital bed watching the fall out from the tradgedy unfold.

Heading into Fenwicks Bond St when friend told me eight planes hijacked and one of the towers was down, ended up in the most crowded Dixons ever, said it could only be Allah, and got reprimanded by some white collar worker for being racist...told him to get real or fcuked because only the Peacelovers could come up with something like that/

Even more of shame he was able to wipe out the call for recount and allegations of vote fraud, and the fact he singed over logging and oil exploration to pristing protected areas his first week in office and and and... if this hadn't happened he may very well have had absolutely no chance at a second term. The man needed an enemy, a threat so heinous that all of the US citizens were rattled to their core and could do nothing other than back him up. The country needed a leader at that time he led them down a false path yet the blithely followed.

He played it for all it was worth.

Now that does bring back memories and the aftermath of it. For me it's more engrained in my memory than 9/11.
