    Hiring a Burmese maid

I want to hire a maid for some light housekeeping and cooking and I have heard that Burmese make quality maids.
But I seem to remember that there is some rules to hiring them as domestics from a thread awhile back, Maybe it was some thread by Dr.Bob.
I have met one that is interested in the job but I want to make sure it is legal to hire her.
How can I find out and any info that is here would be appreciated.

    Thanks...

Gee, BG I saw the title to this thread and was ready to give you shit for hiring a Burmese maid who was probably in Thailand illegally. Then you go and ask how you can make sure you do everything by the book.

I dont think there is any rules you need to follow as such to hire her, she needs to get her papers sorted with you as her employer. She and you will need to visit the labour department.

When I had one a couple of years back, she would go, get the papers, visit a hospital for a check up, photocopies of my passport and work permit etc, I then had to visit one time to prove I existed. etc.

Some fees, and it was all sorted for a year. repeat process each year.

I was just talking to a friend, who says that a guy told him that you have to go to the maids amphur and pay 4000 baht, plus 1900 for a medical certificate for them.
And it is a run around deal because the Thai do not want you to hire a burmese, and if you do and she ain't got a permits then you go to the monkey house and 50k fine.
So if that is so then you are time and 5900 baht invested before they even wash a dish.

Thanks KW, we posted at the same time I guess..

Those figures sound about right. but I sent her to do it all. normally took 2 - 3 days of running around for her.

I considered the time and money to be a sound investment. She was a first class maid.

There is a Shan/Thai Yai temple in Chiang Mai, Wat Pa Pao. It's on the outside of the Moat, down the road to the right as you stand at Chiang Phuak gate looking up Chiang Phuak road, it's Shan architecture and is pretty easy to find as it looks very different to all the other temples in the city. The monks there operate an employment/social welfare agency for Burmese and Shan people. If you go there they will recommend staff for you and help you with all the documentation you need. Expected salary for people you hire from there is 3,500 to 5,000 per month with room and food as well. If you don't hire from there they'll still help with making everything legal.

I do not know if it is the same situation as in Bangkok, but my maid explained that she was then 'required' to hand over a portion of her salary to these people every month then.

    ie Burmese mafia.

It's a temple, there's no extortion if you do it through the monks. If you hire staff from one of the day-labourer pick-up points or from the Main Market here, Gat Luang, then, yes, they have to pay the mob.

Thanks Doctor, Yes this young lady is 29 years old and seems nice, English a little scratchy, but she said 4000 would be a great plenty and maybe if I lick my eyebrows a little she will just live here for the hell of it and not need the permit.
I asked her if she was legal here and she said she had a card.

She is legal to stay in Thailand then, but she will need to get her papers changed into your name as her employer, otherwise she is not legal.

Good that she has a card, that's the major obstacle out of the way. Make sure it's valid for this area as they're normally issued for regions rather than country-wide. You'll still need to get a work permit sorted out or changed to show she's employed by you. If she's already worked here she should have a document with her work history on it. Each previous employer should have signed that work history when she left their employ. That's vital, the cops took our maid away because her last employer hadn't signed off on her resignation. You're probably OK anyway as she's going to be a domestic but it's best for her if everything's legal.

We had one for a while, she was awesome...and cute too.

She had to return to Burma one day urgently as her brother had an accident. They snuck back into burma easily enough.

2 weeks later when she wanted to come back, she called from the jungle to tell us she was on the way. Then she was told to hang up and keep quiet as their were soldiers in the area.

She got back accross the border, but got arrested on a bus heading to Bkk. A week in jail and deported.

She snuck back again a couple weeks later, tried to get us to pay for the smugglers fees for her and her sister....younger...but we declined as did not believe we would see her again. She came back, arrived in bangkok and we agreed to pay the fees once she arrived here.

The smugglers wanted to come to our house to collect the cash.

    We declined.

But she was an excellent worker, great with kids, good cook and cute.

Damn expensive coyote fees for someone only making 3500/4000 a month.

We've had two in the past.

Each one ended up doing a runner, taking with them anything they could get their thieving hands on.

Get a slow one. My maid has a high school re-union today, I staggered out of bed at 7 this morning and she was wandering around the house in a school uniform (she's 27, btw), I did manage a quick grope but she was just too quick for this hungover old man

OK Bob, I went over to Wat Pa Pao this morning with my girl and my tuk tuk owner friend and we roamed around some and finally went upstairs in a building an a guy came out and talked to us and he told me when I asked about the monks that do what you said,, he said that they have no deaLings with Burmese people.
So I guess she is on her way to Mai Hong Son to get her papers cleard to here,, she said she did once and they asked her for 6k and she gave it to them and they told her to come back in the morning and pick up her stamped papers,, when she went back they knew nothing about any papers.. sounds like she was dealing with official Thai alright.

Well I guess all the years that I came here on R&R and just to get drunk and layed don't count.
But since I sold out in the states and moved here and had to live with and deal with Thai exclusively I have came to the realization that they really ain't worth a fuck for anything except opening beers and selling pussy and blow jobs, and some really do not do to good a job of that.
I have had a lot of Thai work for me and most are lazy, hard headed, bull headed assholes that lie and cheat and refuse to do a good job of anything.
Do not get me wrong, I have had a couple of Thai that were alright, but majority are no good.

    IMHO
