    Can You Swat a Fly?

Do you now know why it is so hard to swat a fly? Can you?

Why is it so hard to swat a fly?

The insects adjust their position at the mere hint of a threat, finding shows

If you want to actually swat a fly, it's best to aim for the escape route, not the insect.

CHICAGO - The brains of flies are wired to avoid the swatter, U.S. researchers said on Thursday.

At the mere hint of a threat, the insects adjust their preflight stance to flee in the opposite direction, ensuring a clean getaway, they said in a finding that helps explain why flies so easily evade swipes from their human foes.

"These movements are made very rapidly, within about 200 milliseconds, but within that time the animal determines where the threat is coming from and activates an appropriate set of movements to position its legs and wings," Michael Dickinson of the California Institute of Technology said in a statement.

"This illustrates how rapidly the fly's brain can process sensory information into an appropriate motor response," said Dickinson, whose research appears in the journal Current Biology.

Dickinson's team studied this process in fruit flies using high-speed digital imaging equipment and a fancy fly swatter.

In response to a threat from the front, the fly moves its middle legs forward, leans back and raises its back legs for a backward takeoff. If the threat is from the side, the fly leans the other way before takeoff.

The findings offer new insight into the fly nervous system, and lends a few clues on how to outsmart a fly.

"It is best not to swat at the fly's starting position," Dickinson said. Instead, aim for the escape route.

Dickinson, a bioengineer, has devoted his life's work to the study of insect flight. He has built a tiny robotic fly called Robofly and a 3-D visual flight simulator called Fly-O-Vision.

Saw an article on this many years ago on a similar vein !
If you show your hand in front of the fly and whack your swatter 2' behind it at the same time SPLAT!!! every time - I have been doing this for years and it really works !

Catching them and then throwing them into a wall knocks them out.

I did notice the flies in Thailand are kinda low in numbers and don't move so fast compared to back home.

I have an aussie mate who if he sees one will bet you he'll catch it in his hand. He does it more often than not as well.

They are lower in numbers than they are in some places, but where are you from that they are fewer here??
Most places there are plenty of them here.

I once knew this old Japanese man, Mr. Miyagi, he taught me to catch flies with chopsticks.

He also got me to wash his car, build him a fence, scrub his deck and a bunch of other shit.

I don't worry about flies they don't bite; there's a mosquito in my apartment now buzzing round. I see it get the hands ready and it just seems to disappear as if blending into the backround. Really annoying me.

I lived in LA for just over a year and neither my wife nor I can remember seeing a single fly or mosquito in that period. We lived one mile from the ocean, if that makes a difference.

Thailand is crawling with bugs. I would be in a mental institution if not for window screens here.

Smells a bit too when their legs start glowing.

Isn't insect abuse a trait of serial killers?

The Americans have invented special task forces for the purpose.

Moving your hand very slowly often works too, it is as if they have problems detecting exceedingly slow motion, and once you are close enough, all possible escape routes are covered by your hand.

Surely there are sirens and lots of shouting involved

One would hope so, as well as obscure numerical codes said in a deep, twangy voice over a crackling intercom.
