    Bar Girl or Bike?

    Hey guys,

I've been in Thailand several minutes and I'm just crazy about the place.

Should I get a bar girl or a bike and does Lotus sell the cheapest insects?

I'm confused about the Thai language too. Why do they want me to eat cowpat? What's my coy hen? Is my pen wry?

How much rent should I pay her? What's behind the teak door?

    I need to know now!

Ooooooooooooooooh that sends shivers up my back.

Come on Andrew, what are you actually asking anyway? A Chinese friend of mine wrote ' Shanghai Baby' years ago based on her actual experiences with love in Shanghai. She didn't promote it through forums and although the book was racy and candid it did well.Promoting a book this way is counter publicity.

He may go with the idea that all publicity is good publicity.

Andrew Hicks first came to Thailand in the late seventies and in more recent years has travelled extensively throughout the country with backpack and notebook, observing the interaction of Thais and foreign visitors.

In his various incarnations he has been a corporate lawyer in London and a lecturer at universities on four continents. When living in Hong Kong, his interest in and concern for migrant workers led him to write a best-selling self-help manual for Filipina domestic helpers. That concern is also a primary focus of this, his first novel.

He is also the author, among other books, of The Nigerian Law of Hire Purchase, The Company Law of Singapore and The Company Law of Malaysia, none of which offer nearly as good a story-line as Thai Girl.

He has lectured at universities in Nigeria for three years, in Hong Kong for seven years, in Singapore for five years and England for ten years and has had homes in six different countries. He has written numerous childrens' stories and synopses for more novels and intends to keep writing. He is keen on sailing, classic cars and cats. Phobia... computers. Politics... grey. Favourite colour... blue.

good god, I just read some of that, its pretty bad. I must admit I thought he had an interesting turn of phrase with some of his posts (as misplaced as they were) but those outtakes are complete SHITE!

Heres my in depth review after scanning the excerpts (oxymoron?). Hes a 60 odd year old ex lawyer whos got a wife younger than him. He's put his experience in literary form.
My advice. Go and find any bloke around the age of 60 and they will tell you a similar story. The end.

    2. The Chatuchak Marathon
‘Come on Andrew. Why you so slow?’ says Cat with a smile.
We’re in Chatuchak market in Bangkok, the hottest and most crowded market in the world and I’m carrying a load of stuff that Cat’s just bought.
‘Cat, do you really have to find the same stall you went to last time? We’ve been up this alley twice already.’
‘It had the best tee shirts. Find it soon, no problem.’
‘But I’m parched and it’s bloody hot.’
‘You not like shopping with me, Andrew? Next time I go alone!’
Cat looks daggers as I slump against a wall and mop my brow. I’m not sure marathon shopping’s my strongest event.

perhaps he's self published, I've taught 15 year kids who've published their own books using daddy's money.

would explain his desperate self promotion....

The letters/emails he quotes are a laugh. I read the friggin book, ages ago and emailed that I though it was all right but nothing particularly special and all a bit trite. He never replied.
    Quelle suprise.

The thing is, any idiot can go wherever and turn their experiences into a novel. Many fabulous blogs in China better than this I think. You are not a writer Andrew, I think selling it to Mills and Boon would be problematic, and that is constructive criticism.
