Thailand - Nice place to visit but I don't wanna live there

Despite Thailand being well known in the UK and a popular tourist destination, it seems like the UK's school kids would rather emigrate to developed countries.

    Young 'dreaming of living abroad'

Languages are slipping in secondary schools

Seven out of 10 young people want to live and work abroad one day - but most do not have a second language, research for the government suggests.
A survey of 560 UK students aged from 11 to 18 found enthusiasm for the US, Australia, Spain, Italy and France.
Ministers are using the research to encourage more young people to take up a language.
GSCE results out last week show a continued slump in language learning among teenagers.
The poll - by PCP Research - found 58% of those questioned did not speak a second language, while 71% wished they could.
Asked which countries they would consider living in, the US proved to be the most popular (55%), followed by Australia (52%).
Among European countries, Spain was the most popular, with 47% opting for that.
    Most popular destinations
    USA - 55%
    Australia - 52%
    Spain - 47%
    Italy - 35%
    France - 35%
    New Zealand - 34%
    Germany - 20%
    Portugal - 17%
    The Netherlands - 13%
    Switzerland - 12%

Italy and France attracted 35% of those asked, with Germany and Portugal on 20% and 17% respectively.
Young people rated the residents of Italy and Spain as the coolest and most fashionable in Europe, ahead of France and Britain.
A majority of teenagers questioned (62%) cited "better weather" as a reason for moving abroad.
More than half (53%) said a lower cost of living would attract them.
    Non-compulsory
Schools minister Jim Knight said: "It's fantastic to see the next generation of young people are hoping to spread their wings and strengthen Britain's links to the rest of the world.
"This research is yet more proof that we need to equip today's youth with the tools to succeed in the international marketplace - which means encouraging all young people to improve their language skills.
"Having more young people able to speak a second language is vital to the future success of the UK economy, which is why the government is taking steps to ensure that all young people have the opportunity to learn a language."
The government has been criticised by language enthusiasts for removing the compulsion for all 14- to 16-year-olds to study a foreign language at school.
GCSE results show a continuing fall in numbers taking languages since they were made non-compulsory from the age of 14 in 2004. The Westminster government has shifted the emphasis to primary schools and expects to meet its target of giving all primary pupils the chance to learn a language by 2010. Earlier this year, figures were released which said the proportion of primary schools teaching a language had risen from 70% in 2006 to 84% last year.

only you could infer the title of the OP from that article. Seems like they would not like Tahiti, or Fiji either.

Scarping the bottom of the barrel now, aren't you? What possible relevance does this have to Thailand or to any other of the 180 or so countries not mentioned in your OP? You can do better than this.

The premise of the article is that British youth are too thick or lazy to learn a second language or that the educational system is so bad it's incapable of teaching one.

I hear Spain is nice. I'd pick Spain out of the list. But it's very expensive now with the Euro. I'll choose South East Asia. Cost of living, tropical weather, less rules, less taxes, and less regulations.

I wonder how well known it is to the average UK school kid? Even if it was, any kid coming out of school would hardly pick a "well known" tourist destination as their choice. No jobs!

True BKK I being one of them! When you piss into the wind it will surely return to wet you! as Brown is now finding out,he inherited a seachange in 1997 resulting in an economic upturn also affected by World Economic changes, There was "F"-all he did to encourage this upturn just seeing an opportunity to plunder the Money Chest! and waste it on nebulas crap, he was a shit Chancellor ,what can you expect from someone who Majored in American History! some economic credential that is, He is a Presbyterian Scot (def- a Yorkshire man with his genorosity removed) His lack of encouraging tax policies is hitting the UK now, that,s why the pound is falling against the Dollar, UKs future is bleak according to the Monetary Pundits!.
Just one of many reasons to leave the UK

I think the most we can get out of that article is that 70% of Poms don't want to live in the U.K.

where does it say that? I have read and reread the article and can find no mention of that as the main aim at all

It also does not say that the youth of today are merely aping their forebears, in wanting to go to other countries and exploit them. Do you think that must also be true/
    I have reported your post

well, that is the poms who conducted the survey, or the BBC news which made it all up

    and this

The poll - by PCP Research - found 58% of those questioned did not speak a second language, while 71% wished they could.
if 58% did not speak a second language, then more than 58% wished they could...then 13% do speak a second language but had forgotten that fact

back in the 90's I thought like the title of the thread.
Then one day I sat down in my sitting room on a bleak November afternoon in London .
2 pieces of paper, pro's and con's for UK and Thailand.
From then on I planned my finances and got ready to leave.

I think the kids know what they want. A lot of what they wish for might be influenced by what they see on TV, but the vast majority of people emigrate to improve their standard of living and/or quality of life. For younger people, Thailand clearly has numerous factors going against it compared to the developed countries in the list (and very few positives IMO):

    - Difficult to find pleasant well-paid work and a progressive career (Thais are much more interested in using foreigners than training and developing them)
    - Very hot and wet
    - Poorly educated population
    - Tedious visa and residency situation
    - Developing world government, attitudes, and infrastructure
    - The one-way factor - It's career-wise and financiallly more difficult to change ones mind and go home

What a pile of shite. The article never mentioned Thailand. Desperate measures, Smeg. Have you not noticed the comedy involving one bunch of utter tools in Bangkok trying to overthrow another bunch of utter tools, currently known as the government? The ludicrous and ridiculous antics of the fools on both sides of this game should provide enormous amounts of grist for your mill yet you're posting this lame-ass, tenuous crap. What happened to you? You used to be good at this but now you're just embarrassing the readers and showing yourself up as some kind of vinegar-titted, shoulder-chipped, loser weirdo. Get a grip man, the current situation in Thailand is a goldmine for people like you, take advantage of it, opportunities like this only come along every 18 months or so!

Looks good to me, it means that the new generation will probably not have its sights set on LOS as much as previous generations. Meaning that there will be more space for the rest of us
