The roots of the phrase "Thaiophile"

Is this where the phrase originated from? I didn't invent it, so its only a guess.

No direct link between these two classifications (normally, I hope!), but comparable characteristics (obviously non-scientific and generalised)

    1) A paedophile prefers sexual relationships with children to adults, and may be completely unable or disinterested in developing a successful longterm relationship with an adult.

A thaiophile prefers to exist as an alien surrounded by Thai people and culture to his or her native people and culture, and may be completely unable or disinterested in developing a happy successful life in the West.

    2) Paedophiles often join social groups (rings) to exchange ideas, experiences, pics etc, which serves to deepen their addiction whilst subconciously "normalising" their chosen lifestyle (ie despite being a rare type of person, they surround themselves with similar types to make it seem that what they do is not unusual)

Thaiophiles often join social groups (forums) to exhange ideas, experiences, pics etc, which serves to deepen their addiction whilst subconciously "normalising" their chosen lifestye (ie despite being a rare type of person, they surround themselves with similar types to make it seem that what they do is not unusual)

    3) Paedophiles appear to completely believe in what they do, and are quite able to defend their actions when questioned or challenged, seeing it as acceptable everyday behaviour. However, deep down they may wish that they could happily lead a "normal" life, and not have to exist in such a way to satisfy their desires and service their addiction..

Sounds like vague definitions that could apply to about anything. Substitute with about anything and it will sound the same. So what is it really ? maybe I should read that other thread !!!

Yeah I guess it just means "abnormal attraction to"

    well done Smeg

the adding of "ophile" to the end of words actually means someone who is a lover of the particular attached word (it is a word, not a phrase)

    ie bibliophile..book lover, or collector
Etymology: French, from bibli- + -phile

so nothing about abnormal attraction, you just made that up to fit your ideas. Same as using paedophile as a comparative example, slightly amusing except you are desperately trying to make a nasty point.

although Thaiophile does not exist as a real word, the meaning can therefore be deduced as " a lover of Thailand"

so anyone who likes Thailand a lot. Nothing abnormal in that!
    I have reported your post

It comes from the greek "philia" meaning friend, or friendship. Which oddly would make it's use in say Paedophilia very suspect

If that's the definition then I've personally never seen any Thaiophile!
Some people like adventure and change in their lives and for that reason they leave their homeland and move to other country. Some people fall in love and for that reason they leave their country. Some people get sick n tired of arrogant pricks back home and for that reason they change. I personally think most Westerners who're in LOS or elsewhere in Asia want change in their lifestyle and atmosphere. Nothing to do with their capacity / skills.

Yes RC, the French got a lot of things from the Greeks

I wonder where the Greeks got it from?

Thinking on, I suppose what Smeg wants to convey would be covered by the term "Thaiomaniac" rather than Thaiophile

I think a less disingenuous analogy would be the word 'Francophile' which means:

A person who admires France, its people, or its culture.
    No negative connotations noted.

She asked for a definition of 'normal' on another thread.
    Also, she can't spell chianmgai.
    Also she's really old.

"Changmai" could be something else, you know. Depending on the tones, it could be "New Engineer" or "Wooden Elephant" or Christ knows what else.

No, she really meant for it to mean Chiangmai as in the place we live.
