So DR ANDY (AKA KENKANNIF) is trying to justify Thaiophilia as being something normal (because he is one, and hates the thought of there being something peculiar about him).

However, as the vast majority of the population of the west do not develop an obsession / addiction to Thailand which causes them to dump their life and find any possible way of relocating, it can hardly be classed as normal behaviour. Hence it is abnormal.....

^for sure the teaching game sucks out here but if you can find other work on a decent salary I can't see the problem. (although I wouldn't really fancy it myself)

Sure, its possible to live here forever if necessary, but at the end of the day, Thaiophiles are addicted / obsessed with Thailand. It controls their life. They have gone way beyond "admiration" of the place.

I could describe my sister as a "Francophile". She speaks fluent French, whips up some amazing French dishes, spends most of her holidays in France, and was even once engaged to a French guy. But she isn't obsessed with the place, is not preoccupied with it, and has no need to jack in her job and walk away from family, friends, and community to live there. ie it is a hobby, not a life-overwhelming addiction.

I thought you just said you were not obsessed with me, but that is the tenth post you have mentioned me, never mind actually starting a thread about me.......

As for Thaiophilia, you can define it as you wish, then you can try to fit people into your definition. As you know nothing about me (you have said so yourself) I am not sure how you can say I am anything.

    Please tell us more.
    I have reported your post

No direct link between these two classifications (normally, I hope!), but comparable characteristics (obviously non-scientific and generalised)

    1) A paedophile prefers sexual relationships with children to adults, and may be completely unable or disinterested in developing a successful longterm relationship with an adult.

A thaiophile prefers to exist as an alien surrounded by Thai people and culture to his or her native people and culture, and may be completely unable or disinterested in developing a happy successful life in the West.

    2) Paedophiles often join social groups (rings) to exchange ideas, experiences, pics etc, which serves to deepen their addiction whilst subconciously "normalising" their chosen lifestyle (ie despite being a rare type of person, they surround themselves with similar types to make it seem that what they do is not unusual)

    3) Paedophiles appear to completely believe in what they do, and are quite able to defend their actions when questioned or challenged, seeing it as acceptable everyday behaviour. However, deep down they may wish that they could happily lead a "normal" life, and not have to exist in such a way to satisfy their desires and service their addiction..

    'philia' is a medical suffix.

It has nothing to do with 'Thaiophile'

yes Lily, I have already said that

but it is unimportant as Smeg only wants to believe what he thinks is the meaning

I think that is fair enough, after all, he coined the word.

very true - but completely within the tone of the OP

Smeg - its not a raw nerve but to compare ppl who happen to like thailand with peado's is a cheap and nasty tactic indicating that perhaps your attempts at meangingful arguement are failing.

ok - this might be a forum and thus certain behaviours are acceptable that might otherwise not be (eg calling ppl ****s and so forth)

but to start comparign ppl to peado's is just wrong !

To be fair Willy, he also included necrophiliacs in there too.

No, he got muddled with words and was so desperate to find a dictionary meaning to show 'phile' in a negative light, he stumbled upon a medical term.

Medical terms and ordinary English are quite often not interchangeable or no public relations people would call themselves PR people, though the analogy (pun intended) fits.

Now, if you are a real doctor Andy, you will find this funny. (well mildly amusing)
