Ants

Does anybody have a working solution to keeping ants out of your house? I don't like to spray the toxins inside unless necessary. Is there something that can be put around the exterior perimeter?

Please keep this on topic. I know what some of you are thinking.

Ants and borers the scourge of all who live here.

I always put an underground irrigation system and within the house slab.

Pump insecticide through the irrigation system once a year and which floods the soil under the house slab base with insecticide. Kills everything with no need to spray within the house.

Appart from that method I only know that spraying chemicals onto their nests keeps the little buggers at bay.

I have a little team of ants, they live under my windowsill and forage in my kitchen. Sometimes I leave a bit of sugar out for them.

The only way to keep ants out of your house is to remove their food supply.
Empty the bin that food scraps go into everyday.
Don't leave any food out, put it in the fridge.
Clean tables and work-surfaces of any crumbs and food scraps.

Also, use ARS ant pellets. The ants take this back to the nest and it poisons all of them.

Yuo talking ordinary ants or white ants? For white ants (termites) spray - and soon. For ordinary (small) ones in the house, when we get a trail of them, the missus puts talc power down on the trail. Seems to make them go away. Otherwise, no food sources around.

Spray where walls go to ground or the floors, spray the ground a foot or so around the house, spray lower walls inside and spray all window openings and framework.
Spray under counters and cabinets.
Use a product called Chaindrite or Shelldrite mixed with water and spray every week for a few weeks and then cut back to once a month as you see that you have gained some control over the ants.
I have done this for damn near 8 years and I have very little trouble with ants and I have lived in 3 houses and all had ants when i moved in.

Along with the other suggestions:

Common talcum powder works... put in cups that the legs of your larder go into, the metal ones that the Thais use for food storage.

Dump a bunch around the insides of your cabinets on the floor next to the walls. Spread it around anywhere you have an intrusion.

Harmless to pets and kids.

As others have mentioned, keep a clean and tidy place. Throw rubbish away everyday. Clean up after cooking, do not leave any scraps or food laying around. Put everything in the fridge.
Spray surrounding area with "Baygon".
All else fails try Napalm. Best done when you are on vacation far away.

Well if you know so much about it then you should advise him.

But The exterminators I have hired here charge around 4000 to 5000 baht and guarantee results for a year or some 2 years and Shelldrite is the best that they have used and kills termites too.

BURR, you do not want to drink Shelldrite of even get it in liquid on your face, it stings. But you do as you wish, I think it is to late to worry now from what you tend to post.

I have not been able to find it here but ORKIN pest control employee I knew in Calif. told me to get a few containers of Chemical grade Boric Acid Powder and spread it around and on ant trails and put it where they came in and it would get rid of them, I bought a few packs of it in sprinkle containers at Target store and it really did work and is not harmful to humans or pets, but I have not seen it here in this Asian Tiger country.

So if I can find it I will put out the word, works damn fine, but if I can't then when you coming over to visit and have a few with me then bring me a couple a 4 cans OK?

Comes in a white chalk like powder cake. Just scrape some on ant trails and ant hills. I honestly can't be sure it's Boric Acid but sure works good. The locals call it Chalk Kâa Mót . "Ant killing chalk"

Try a little experiment. Put a teaspoon full of sugar an a worktop or somewhere that you know the ants go then whipe the area around it with a little lemon juice.
I found that the ants would not cross the lemon juice to get at the sugar.

I have also planted lemon grass in areas around the house and this together with keeping the area free of stagnant water seems to have reduced the number of mosquitos we are getting
