not an email scam, but a close friend who lives in my thai village got hit with this one shortly after he connected to the internet for the first time:

assumed his antivirus software was up to the job, and visited some "dodgy" sites.
next thing, as soon as he tried to access the internet, he would get a screenfull of really disgusting shit involving women in compromising situations with donkeys and other shit.
on closing the page, it would come up with a picture of a cockroach, with an explaination that his computer was now infected with a virus which could only be removed upon payment of x amount of usd to a certain account.
he tried everything to get rid of the "virus", eventually managing to get hold of some software which successfully removed it, but not before having to go to go to a few computer shops and having to tell the truth (i still think he blamed it on a "friend", proibably myself!), but it made us both wonder, since accessing pornsites (he swears to this day he did not!!!!) in thailand and some other countries is supposed to be illegal, and given how difficult it was to get rid of it, just how many people paid up, and how much money the perpetrators made off this one
