Hypocrites, Realists, Thick-skinned or Don't Care

I've often wondered what the posters here think of comments slagging off Thais when . . . their partners/wives/children etc . . . are Thai.

    Is it hypocrisy?

Is it simply a matter of living here and being realistic with the crap that goes down
in the LoS aqs a matter of course.

Can one be so thick-skinned to read and write copious amounts of quite nasty comments about Thais and not be affected by it

Or it is simply a couldn't give a flying one

    Boredom ?

A cathartic need to slag of something/one?

    Blame it on something/one?

Living in the land of shadow?
My kids are Thai, I don't like slagging them off, but I will comment on their society.

    Fair comment G2B.

There are lots of people who'll slag off anything they can. Kind of spectator sport.

I get a bit pissed off with the "lazy Thai" comments. In my village the poor bastards work in the fields and in the forest and I'm damn sure you'de never see Euros working the way they do..

You cant deny there are Thais that are lazy. I bet in that same village theres just as many who can't be arsed or offer some excuse as to why they can't work.

Sure, but isn't that the same in every community in the world?

And in retrospect, there probably aren't that many. If they don't work they'd be bloody hungry. No falangs here, no tourism. So the whole place revolves round agriculture. I'd say they mostly work the fields and the hills round about and few get to skive. Just my view, but it's the way I see it.

I'm certainly the laziest human here. Luckily I've convinced them that the internet is "work". So I'm not completely abhorred.

Cos there are some people who just bang on and on and on about lazy Thais etc etc. It just gets very tedious.
One accepts that many of the people on this forum have worked hard to get themselves here. Many are still working hard. Good on 'em. Some, like me have just got lucky. However, we are the minority. I've lived in various places over the years (1st, 2nd and 3rd. world) and I would certainly not generalise the Thais to be lazy per se.

Some people just love to moan and groan. Sad but true.

Interesting OP, PH. I don't like the generalisation here (& on TV and every other Thai forum I've come across) that all Thai males are lazy, good for nothing, layabouts who pimp off & beat their GFs. I'm sure that may be true in some instances, but not in all. Same as not all Thai women are (ex) prostitutes.

Because these forums are male dominated, one stereotype is allowed to exist & the other is blasted down.

Take as you find & judge people, if you must, as individuals. Same as you would in your own country.

Ive lived in a fair few countries and Ive found that Thais have been the laziest shirkers/workers of all the countries I've lived in.
Thats not a moan, thats simply how it is.

Talking about tourism in my valley, my village. Ain't none. Therefore, no easy money to be had, no falang to fleece.

Good topic PH. I would say that many people who complain constantly about Thais here wouldn't be as vocal were they standing in front of their Thai wives/friends/strangers.

I have personally gone round with a survey and asked every female in Thailand and spent days counting the result?
    What do you think!

I'm Thai. I slag off Thai's on a daily basis and do feel some remorse about it. I think it boils down to cultural relevance. Although I was born here and have 50% of the blood I don't think its an inherently Thai trait to approach life from the "mai bpen rai" point of view. I've encountered the same attitude in island cultures (not Thai) too. Its just different here. People aren't filled with the "dream" idea that pushes success in more developed nations (ie America.) I think that it can be likened to a caste type system where people kind of accept a role in society assigned at birth. I'm not saying that there is a caste system in Thailand. But it's very difficult for a person not born into money here to succeed. If I hadn't been offered the opportunities I have and had been born into the situation the people we slag on here are, I couldn't be arsed to make much of an effort either. It seems that success is an insurmountable goal if you're not in the know or carry a good name. I feel bad for the people that piss me off on a daily basis but there are people here with iniative that make it. I think that if Thai society weren't so class based this nation would be on alot better track.

Excellent point, well said. I've done the reverse in many ways. A few years ago I decided to kick ambition, material gain and "success" into touch. Reevaluated my priorities and realised I didn't need half the baggage I was carrying and working to maintain. Reduced baggage by about 75 % and have never been better off. Priorities changed. IMHO Timba has summed it up nicely. Not so much a matter of ambition and aspiration but more a matter of need to be.
