Perhaps you should give some of your own examples. I'm not altogether sure what you mean much less why Thais need my help or what qualifies any of us to give it to them?
Maybe he means paying the barfine for naughty Noi.
I always start by teaching them not to put apostrophes on plurals.Quote:

I often share my knowledge of traffic laws by laying on the horn, screaming at the top of my lungs and flipping the bird out the window.
Often several times a day. I chalk it up to my indulgent and generous disposition.
Set up a bio-diesel plant on a community-based idea in Loei . . .
Everyone was doing well, we employed six people directly sand over 30 indirectly, the farmers were happy at cheaper fuel, the buses were happy with it and clean air, everyone was doing well and happy.
The I handed the project over to a guy I had known for a while and who had shown himself trustworthy . . . I needed to go back to Singapore for a while to take care of my main business.
1) Phonecall that the truck was stolen
2) The manager got drunk, went gambling and lost close to 200.000baht - - - our money
3) All of the sudden the profit margin went down
4) Sales slumped (so we were told)
5) We lost a lot of customers (so we were told - turns out that the partner was selling but not declaring)
6) People we had sacked for theft were badmouthing us and the technology
Fukk it, closed the thing down. Now everyone is paying high fuel costs, people are unemployed.
Fukk 'em.
Too stupid and greedy to help them selves even when it is handed to them on a silver platter.
Same thing second time around in Chanthaburi . .
Never again.
very sad
but they were your choice of managers?
That's the problem. You upset the balance of power. When the peasants aren't being walked on by high and mighty, the see-saw of authority goes whacko.
You and your lofty ideals of trust, shared benefits, cooperative spirit, and committed stakeholders... serves you right. :)
I feel sorry for people that try to make a difference. It seems there's a sense of expected failure that is perpetuated by the ever present mai pen rai attitude. Almost like they can't handle progress.
possibly Tex
but just handing a project over and vanishing is hardly good management
Because PH had high ideals does not mean, unfortunately, anyone else would share them. People with low education tend to grab what they can without any thought for the future. Sad but true
There it is - the mai pen rai attitude that always fucks them in the end. This peasant attitude means that they will never progress as a society, even if it is handed to them on a silver platter. I would never employ a Thai to do anything - they will always fuck it up somehow. They expect things to be easy, and when they find out that something isn't, they just stop trying and say "oh, mai pen rai" and go back to their whiskey and gambling.
Whatever for? In their minds they are better than me, so maybe they should help me?Quote:

Lofty ideals, absolutely, and stupidly. Actually used some of my inheritance from when my father passed away, never meant to make money out of it - I was just STOOPID. We do quite well and thought we'd help those less fortunate: STOOPID
Also, for some bizarre reason I had/have this affinity with Thailand - possibly because I was born here while my parents were posted here = STOOPID
and
DrAndy:Well, it wasn't just a throwing away basis, the guy I handed day-t-day management to is Singaporean/Thai and started the business with me - he is actually the engineer that built the transestrification system, hardly a peasant with no knowledge.Quote:

Yes, Fabian, it was in Isaan. The machinery is rusting away and the lease-grant on King's land is running out.
Waste of time and effort, really . . . but not half as bad as my second venture in the LoS . . . this time I thought it would make a difference if we all moved there . . . STOOPID
Still, it is doing quite well now . . . and we're happy living in Malaysia :)
Im sort of with PH on this one. I think something similar cam up on another thread here and someone summed it up perfectly for . It was something along these line.
"If you ask most Thais if they want 100 baht today or 500 next week they'll take 100 baht nearly every time"
Next to zero forethought, planning skills of a 5 year old and as trustworty as a pirate.
They'd steal the sugar out of your tea.
have you got a Thai ID?Quote:

Was headed down that same road myself but pulled out after losing a few thousand dollars due to the Thai manager scamming. Shame really because we all could have benefited. Its not that the people I was dealing with were poorly educated or low intellect, more just a case of a culture that places more importance and respect on short term rip offs and corruption than honesty and normal western business ethics.
Why even bother trying to help as the way the Thais see it is that if you show compassion and make yourself vulnerable by trusting them, you are just a fool ready to be milked. They respect and admire the local loan shark who is charging them 10% interest a month far more than the dumb Farang who would loan them the same money at zero interest.
No point trying to help them as compassion towards those less fortunate is simply regarded as a sign of weakness and makes you a fool ripe for the picking.
Thai logic and Thai culture.
Upto about 20 years ago if you were born here you were entitled to Thai citizenship
When a nation that is proud of very little else except being Thai and showing respect to what a persons status is as opposed to how they attained it, then they are simply going to try and copy that and "help themselves" to things rather than try to better themselves as the majority of westerners do i.e by hard work.
I used to think that it was a bit unfair when people said there are lots of Thais who are just lazy, but the longer I stay here the more I believe they are.
Give a Thai a fish and feed him for a day.
Give a Thai a fishing pole and he'll pawn it for a bottle of Lao khao.
