Why does Thailand have ten times the intentional homicide rate of the UK?

I genuinely cannot think why. Any suggestions?

The only one I can think of is that people here maybe think they have more of a chance of getting away with it, due to incompetent police who will label it as suicide and head off for lunch.

Interesting theory but do they though? Do they get away with it; would be interesting to see comparative conviction rates.

In my opinion it's much more simple than that. Guns, specifically handguns and relative ease of access to such. The US for example is at 6.1/100,000, New Zealand 1.4/100,000 so a similar contrast there.

Incidentally that's a great link you've provided. Bookmarked that.

Because no Thai wants to grow up to be a man, so they either kill each other or turn Katoey or just go completely queer.

idiotic response to quite possibly a valid OP.

I'd go a step further Ant, life is cheaper and less valued in thailand than UK also...

I think the Jai Yen and saving face thing has a lot to do with it. Well that plus the easily availability of guns and general acceptance of criminal practices.
If a Thai looses his cool and happens to have a gun handy you better start running.

Why does Thailand have ten times the intentional homicide rate of the UK?

Low education levels, firearms easily available and not well regulated, militaristic and nationalist culture, the concept of 'face', a wholly inept and corrupt Police force, corrupt court system that can be easily manipulated and paid off, a religious belief system that puts less value on life, higher levels of poverty, etc.

On top of all the reasons mentioned they also have a crappy emergency rescue facilities too, otherwise quite a few of these murders would be attempted murders.

Not to mention the ones that go unreported.

I wonder how comparative rates for murder, suicide and crime in general would compare for Farang expats in Thailand? I reckon at a guess suicide would have to be about 100 times higher. Murder (of Farangs, not by Farangs) would probably be about 20 times higher and general crimes I don't know. Talking here about overall figures including those living in tourist areas, not just family guys settled out in the country. Would be interesting to hear others opinions?

    strangely enough, no

This subject has been raised by one of our older, more respected members, and is based on FACTS, so must be answered in a similar tone, with information

all these conjectures hardly make any difference, maybe this or maybe that

nobody really knows, but obviously more information should be available to make even an educated guess (like how did the people die? gunshot, somtam etc)
