Thread: Noise pollution - when will this concept arrive in Thailand?

- Vehicles which lack any sort of noise reduction system being commonplace

- Shopping centres where the idea seems to be that whoever makes the most noise will sell the most

- Peasants on a circuit through various sois collecting scrap on an antique motorbike & cart from 5:30am onwards with a pump airhorn (have only noticed these horns in the past year)

- Loud speakers in parks and on beaches, the kind of places people might want to seek peace and quiet

- Construction site deliveries at 1am in the middle of residential areas


I gather that Thais are afraid of quietness and like noise because it scares bad spirits away. I guess I must be a bad spirit

^ What about the kiddyish music they used to blast out of the KFC ice cream booths? It repeated every 20 seconds. The poor sods working in the booth from 10am to 10pm had to listen to it over 2000 times every day.
Hopefully nothing between their ears to be damaged by it....

Music playing so loud in the gyms lounge that people have to shout to each other to be heard.

Schools and colleges sharing their music with you at 7:30 a.m.

People doing nothing to quiet a fcuking dog that's been barking nonstop for the past 15 months.

Nonstop announcements at every public place conceivable, which nobody seems to listen to, but which make the announcer feel incredibly cool.

All part of the price of admission to a third-world circus. Thankfully, since moving to the hinterlands, I only hear the odd dog and occasionally the faint college lunchtime music (1/2 km away).

F**king BTS in the mornings and rush hour : An insult to everybody riding it. They know nobody will complain, they know nobody can avoid it, they know there is no alternative way to travel.

Luckily I don't use the BTS anymore at that time. Classic example of the BTS executives insulting people's "intelligence".

come to Indonesia then matey, you'll love the noise even more, as there is lots more noise.

In fact it is law to honk the horn of a car whenever overtaking or passing any other road user.

And these mosques compete with each other (5 times a day) calling out the prayers and sermons....

Out in the sticks they have the village tannoy system which blast out music and local announcements at 6 in the morning. Then there's the elections. The candidates send round pick ups with tannoys so loud they'd wake the fcuking dead.

I had a co-worker who rented out a house just outside of Pattaya and he found out the first morning that he was living next to one of the loud speakers that blared the announcements at 6am. He was not happy, especially on Saturdays and Sundays.

It's not only the elections that send around the pick-ups. Those damn kickboxing tournies do at as well, along with fruit trucks. They do the same in Korea, but they do it with a bit more style: Whenever there's a new business open, they'll send around pickups with hot dancing girls in the back wearing next to nothing, and they'll hand out flyers to passerbys. Great stuff.

Most likely will be a million years before civilization catches up with Thai to even think of noise pollution, look how long after coming down out of the trees before humans thought about noise abatement,, so just figure how much longer it will be for the Thai.

I agree completely with you as from this week ik can hear the basses from a fair 3 Km from where I live for the Thai's it is normal any way they are born deaf

So what is the deal with these pump airhorns used by the scrap collectors? And why have they only recently appeared?

Are they intended to tell everyone in the neighbourhood that the scrap man is passing on his motorised trolley? Does the guy simply not give a fuck about the 99.5% of people who have no interest in his presence but would rather not hear pump airhorns blasting into their homes every few minutes througout the day?

One of the two most annoying things I found about living in Thailand, the other issue being safety. From those fcuking 'turbo' sound systems in the back of pickups (and even on the front of motorbikes !!) to loud TV's to the clackers of the kai ping vendor I don't think I had one day of complete silence during 16 years in Thailand. It was ALWAYS noisy !!
