With the job market in Thailand getting worse.....

On the radio this morning on the way to work, they said that there would be an additional 10,000 jobs lost in the manufacturing sector in Thailand before the end of the year. The person advised that this would put job loss numbers around 200,000 for the year (if I remember correctly).

It was said that next year would bring more doom and gloom for the manufacturing companies in Thailand, as the auto industry is projected to be down an accumlative 30% next year.

That being said, the tourism numbers are off by a wide margin as well. Where are these workers going to go for money? Back to the rice farms? Prostitution? Street beggars? Hawkers?

With tourism down, service jobs are in big big trouble as well. I fear that Thailand is heading for a large economic crisis within the next 12-36 months. Labor unions striking, higher wages being demanded, political stability in question. All causing more companies to go to places like China, Vietnam, and yes even Cambodia is becoming a player in the manufacturing.

What will our beloved Thailand look like in 3 years time? I hope for the best, but am expecting the worst.

What will become of these out of work people? Thailand doesn't have an unemployment plan to speak of. They are talking about getting some money from the governement for short term help for the people, but when that runs out what's left?

An unemplyment rate of 15 - 20% isn't that far out of the question within the next 12 months. Even higher is things keep trending down. Will we see the country regress back to a "Cambodian" way if life?

There ya go Krypto and it didn't hurt did it........? A whole post without you using the P word.

Thailand is already suffering due to their political problems and unfortunately the global economic crisis has not arrived here yet.

We can keep our fingers crossed but I am not holding my breath whether Thailand can dodge future economic gloom and doom or not.

The next 2 years are gunna be tough here.

Gunna be tough here? Are you a working expat in Thailand (other than a teacher)? Things ARE tough here already for manufacturing companies. Specifically automotive suppliers. These are Thailands bread and butter. Orders are expected to fall 30%. Toyota is even feeling the heat. If Toyota is feeling it, you damn well can be assured that everyone else is in serious trouble.

Outsourcing factory jobs from the USA / Europe to Asia = Middle class gone

Factory workers in Asia not middle class income = new middle class no buy car

New middle class no buy car = BIG FUCKING POM PEM!

you can't expect people to buy made in Thailand shoddy junk when they can buy a better quality product from about any country in the world. anything I have ever bought, from electronics to clothing Made In Thailand has been junk that will not last long, wall plugins and switches last about as long as an ice cube in the sink, Battery for a motorcycle lasts about a month and then you are told that was all the guarentee, Thailand knows not a thng about workman craftsmanship.
So it serves them right, and now they will raise the prices of long stay visas and renews and force the rest of us to leave too, that is how Thai logic works.

Thailand been in the dumps approaching 2 years now. So another year or so will be more of the same. Unless Somchai pushes the damn "Start" button for the Megaprojects. Thailand will stay as it is.

They do like they did in '97/98. Go home to the farms and live as best they can. A lot of the workers in the factories and tourist industry come from upcountry and when there is no work in the cities they go back to the only place they can.

With tourism down 40% this year, do you think there is room for another 100,000 prostitutes / hostess' in the tourist places?

Now reading that rice and chicken exports are expected to be down in 2009 as well. Things are not looking good!

Already quite a mass exodus back home. Even for those that have jobs, Low pay and escalating costs make it impossible to survive living in Bangkok or other industrial areas. If one can't send home some money at the end of the month better to go home and live the village life which is a much better option than living in a one room apartment with 10 others.

Couple that to the fact that rice prices are now about 450$/MT FOB compared to the high they reached mid year of 1000$/MT FOB.

Everybody seems to have a new car here, havent you noticed?

Well, most of them are going back soon.

Plenty of work coming up in the repo industry

1997 was lovely for me, too. Loved that Bt/pound xrate.
Well, Thailand quit exporting garlic when that food hoarding started earlier this year; have to use US cloves now.
There's still PTT, Singha beer, the Jpn mfg. Last time the economy faltered and tourism slowed, the Thais in my neighbourhood raised bungalow and menu prices to make up for the slowdown in traffic...
