    Poor people and mobile telephones

My phone, for me, is there for convenience. If I could live and conduct my life without it, I would.

I keep it on vibrate and it stays in my pocket so I know when it goes off.

I don't walk around with it in my hand.

I don't strap a pair of headphones to it and play music with it.

I don't clip it to my waist or belt.

I detest those blue tooth things in peoples ears, to me they stink of an attempt at self importance (especially in this country).

I detest people who try and conduct a conversation with me face to face while also conducting one with a person on the phone.

If I am riding a motrsai taxi I do not expect the driver to answer it whilst bombing down the f**king road doing 70. But he has to, doesn't he? and I insist always that he pulls over.

If, on the rare occasion, my phone does ring, I don't let it ring a few times so a few poeple can "notice" that I own a phone and then talk loudly into it. (It vibrates anyway so that would be impossible).

For some people phones are an addiction, a fashion item they must be seen to have.

I don't swear by the camera on my phone. In fact it is shit. If I wanna take pictures I have a camera.

I don't bother, like some people, to connect my phone to the net and check my mail. That is shit and for people with better eyesight than me. I find that pointless. Again, if I wanna check mail, I go to a computer.

I don't strap a dildo to it and f**k myself with it but I bet some people would by the way they worship them around here.

There are many more annoyances I could list here..... aren'tthere?

I would love for these days to return:

The "brick" phone you posted got great reception.

Why would you buy a phone with a camera if you are not going to use it.

I just have a cheap Nokia. No camera, no special ring tone features or abilities.

all the things you mention are annoying, but look at it another way, if someone has so little going on in their lives that a phone can be of major importance, just be thankful that your life is better

Pat, you have a mobile phone, you're a big a [at][at][at][at] as the rest of them.

It's all about face, isn't it? To a Thai, a mobile phone is just another piece of jewelry or gold that they can show everyone. The more expensive looking it is, the better.

For me, I'm happy with my cheap Nokia. I paid 3,000 baht for it 3 years ago and it still works fine, and I will keep using it until it breaks. I have no use for those flashy "look at me!" phones.

Fondly remembered as the "Talking Brick"- agree about speech quality !

I remember the joy when my company exchanged my "Mobira Porta-fone" with one of these !
I was on 24hr callout at the time and up to then I had to carry a bloody satchel with a battery pack that weighed about 4 bloody kilo everywhere !!!

Especially the ones with the blue flashing light. Twats walk around with them in their ears for hours to show "look at me, I've got a 1000 baht gadget, and I'm so popular that I need to be permanently connected to my phone."

You are a peasant Pat. I haven't used one since 2002. Its taxi or walk for me, depending on traffic.

Not in Pattaya, very rare these days to see Thai girls wearing gold, I should think 90 percent of them have by now been victims of muggings or snatchings, they learn pretty quick these people.

I too fail to see what the OP has to do with poor people.

As to the point made, different strokes for different folks. If you're happy with what you have, then good for you.

I have a Nokia N82 I absolutely adore. You say if you want to take pictures you carry a camera? Why bother when you can have a 5mp cam equal or better than many point-n-shoots inside something you already carry? And, if I'm traveling, I can simply push a button and upload them to Flickr and share.

Can't find your hotel? Bring up the Net and find their webpage, then use GPS with maps.

Why carry an iPod (which I own 3 of, btw) when my phone holds 2,000 songs. I don't have to mess with wires as my stereo wireless headset plays great music and automatically cuts the tunes when a call comes in.

Bored while watiing 25 minutes for dinner? Check your e-mail, browse the web with built in wi-fi. And SKype works on my phone, so when I'm at a wi-fi hotspot I can call overseas for practically free.

Sure, the N82 is stylish (well, mine was until I bounced it down 3rd Road), but I carry it not to look good but because it fits my lifestyle. You can't broadly paint anyone who uses a fancy phone as a face-grabbing wannabe just because your lifestyle doesn't require such a device.

Apple sold 1 million new iPones over the weekend. I have a Touch, with the same software and consciously chose not to go for the iPhone because of the size and interface. But you can't deny the device is amazing and wth wealth of additional apps -- from weather to Wordpress to games -- makes it a very compelliing mini-computer platform for people looking for a convergence device.

Why carry mp3 player, camera, GPS unit and phone when you can carry a phone?
