    Facebook

Did a search, apparently it's not a thread yet.

I've heard some posters mentioning using it.

    I'm unconvinced!

Is it any good? Is it really meant for teenagers? What are the database features? Can you cross-reference to find people with similar hobbies/interests?

It's sounds intriguing and it's becoming a huge phenom but I'm becoming an old fart running out of new tricks...

Teenagers use myspace. They use facebook too, but so do adults (me included). I basically view it as a time waster when I'm bored at work (which is quite often). And yeah - you can see people's interests, photos, etc. And there are lots of games too.

I actually put up a page and I got "friended" by some high school people but haven't checked since.

Songwriters, freelancers, small-business people are also on it, and can connect with like-minded people (apparently). If so, then I would be interested in it....

Right then, I'll have another go at it, see what happens, and report back.

    MTD mentioned he uses it...

    ^ True.

I find it stops me sleeping at night though. I see people from my past and start remembering all the things that I used to get up to then lose sleep thinking about them.

Found my old mate Mark the Baker on there. Fascinating character who now only bakes privately once a week.

^^^ I disagree, its mainly for finding old mates and colleagues.

I wont facebook anyone I dont know, even if they try to add me, many others do the same.

Friendster, facepic etc are much better for that sort of thing...

I got this in my Facebook inbox today:

    Hello!

My name is Stephanie Bousley and I am a graduate student film maker at NYU Tisch Asia, here in Singapore. I saw that you were based here in Singapore and wanted to write and say hello. I was writing you because I am currently looking to cast a male part for a short film I will be shooting in April of this year. The story is a dark comedy about two fundamentalist Christians who go to people's houses and torture them into believing in God. It is not too dark or serious, and should be a lot of fun to shoot. From your Facebook pictures I think you have a look that I am going for, and was wondering if you'd be interested in doing a reading for one of the parts? I don't even know if you're an actor, but we are trained to work with people of all different backgrounds / levels of experience, and casting is so hard in Singapore anyways because the acting pool is so limited. I can easily email you the script and have you look it over to see if you or anyone you know may be interested. Again, even if you are not an actor but would like to try your hand at acting, come to some rehearsals, and then to the 3-day shoot, we should definitely talk. There is possible payment for being in the film as well.

Please get back to me soon if you want more information or would like to set up a time to have coffee. I look forward to hearing back from you!

    Sincerely,
    Stephanie Bousley
    Future Director
    NYU Tisch Asia

I am not too sure how happy I am to have been on someones list to be cast as a a fundamentalist Christian who tortures people.

It might not be as bad as all that, SBF. She might've actually been thinking you'd be perfect as one of the victims...

Contrary to what obsidian the Luddite seems to believe, Facebook's a great tool. It's up to the individual how they use it and whilst some may employ it to 'advertise their existence' they would be the minority.

All my friends and family that are signed up can immediately see any pics I put up, what we're up to, and vice-versa.

    A Few Things I Know...

A few adult children in my town use it (one of them is in his 40's) quite a bit. The object for some of them is to see who can get the most number of friends.

I saw an article in Fortune Asia Magazine once that downplayed the whole Facebook thing. It was written by an exec...must have been in his 40's...whose teenage daughter convinced him to use it, or at least try it out. Then he got a bit nervous after awhile at the reality of having his name on there and all his friends broadcast to just anyone in the world who might be looking at the site, so after a week or so he took all his stuff off and tried (without success) to disable his account.

I don't have much faith in Facebook and think it's a passing fad. However, the guy who invented it, an Ivy League dropout (sound like someone else we know? ahem! Gates), is now said to be worth $1.5 billion U.S.

There is a Canadian who is trying to use Facebook to start up an English language education school for the poor in Vietnam. His link is here:

facebook is off putting for me because they do all that silly stuff like vampire bites.

it's all very teenage and girly i think.

i don't expect the phenomena to continue that long and expect a service of a more adult nature to take its place.

^Well, facebook was supposed to target the more mature college age crowd, as opposed to myspace, for example.

Business people mostly use linkedin and a few other sites.

I think its quite useful for keeping in touch with pals who are generally flung far and wide over the globe. Met up with some folks who, for one reason or another, thought I'd never see again, and that's a good thing.

Don't bother with all that vampire / zombie shite. Jst switch it off. For me its a fancy version of email.
