    Top Gear antics

Top Gear's Arctic drink-drive scene 'grossly irresponsible'

The footage prompted one viewer to complain it was "grossly irresponsible". (Flickr: Aaronyx, file photo)

Popular British motoring program Top Gear has been rapped by the broadcaster's independent watchdog for showing presenters drinking while driving a car in the Arctic.
A special edition of the program, aired in July last year, featured the show's three presenters in a race to the Magnetic North Pole.
Two of them, Jeremy Clarkson and James May, were driving a heavily-modified Toyota pick-up truck and were shown drinking gin and tonics as they did so.
It prompted one viewer to complain that the footage was "grossly irresponsible".
The show's producers said the item had been filmed in an uninhabitable area of the North Pole, in international waters where no drink-driving laws existed, and that the presenters were not shown to be drunk or out of control.
However the BBC Trust upheld the complaint saying that drinking while driving "could be seen to glamorise the misuse of alcohol".
Other complaints about the show, ranging from criticisms of the scorn shown about global warming and the possible effect on the local wildlife, were rejected.

Jeeze, don't people have anything better to do than to complain about TV programmes? Sure, drink driving's wrong in inhabited areas, but what were they going to hit? A Polar bear? A walrus?

Well, next time I'm driving a pick-up in the Arctic with a tv crew following me, I'll know not to drink G&T, thanks to a viewer's vigilance.

That show was superb. The fact they had top quality drink and tucker made it even funnier because the 3rd member of TG was travelling by dog-sled and had absolutely no home comforts.

I remember about 15 years ago, used to hang out on Soi Yamato, used to be quite common to see people riding their motorbikes down the road with a bottle of beer in their hand, now that is just dumb and stupid, cans of beer are so much safer if you have an accident

    I miss TopGear.

And don't give me a link to it. Crappy dial-up would implode at the mere idea of downloading Clarkson et al.

Just watched the latest one. I was in stitches at one point.

Isn't about time you got a proper job and got back to civilisation (or Bangkok, anyway)?

    Proper job - yes.

Back to civilisation? I'd slit my wrists if I lived in BKK. Looks like I'm moving slightly further out of civilisation, instead. But I will try to sort out a decent internet connection with the money I save on rent.

BTW, is the Hamster still on Top Gear?

I love Jeremy and his snotty attitudes about cars he doesn't like. Lots of Top Gear on youtube.

I just emailed my son because his M3 made Jeremy's list of 'cool' cars now that Audis are being driven only by 'cocks' as he says. LOL.

^I'm getting youtube completely without restrictions at my Bangkok home on True. Tomorrow I go to my home in Phuket and will let you know, as I have TOT broadband there, but don't expect any problems.

Can you not get youtube? Where are you and what is your ISP?

Balders, you are a very, very clever little turnip-eating guttersnipe. That is an extremely cunning plan. Much better than when your uncle tried to cut his toenails with a sword.

This could be a real market opportunity.
Us "less able" internet people would pay bucks for movies/series delivered via post on DVD things. Is it DVD or CDV?

^^^Recent Top Gears for me, please. Must have Clarkson on & the Hamster would be good if he's still around. Not so bothered about James May.
