Thai Urban Legends You Have Heard

Every country has urban legends. I have read a few online and am going to post them here.

Have any of you heard talk from the Thais (family and friends) of urban legends from your village or city?

1998 Urban Legend: Hedonist Air Pumpers

(16 April 1997) "The government must crack down on this disgusting craze of 'Pumping'," a spokesman for the Nakhon Ratchasima hospital told reporters. "If this perversion catches on, it will destroy the cream of Thailand's manhood." He was speaking after the remains of 13 year-old Charnchai Puanmuangpak had been rushed into the hospital's emergency room. "Most 'Pumpers' use a standard bicycle pump," he explained, "inserting the nozzle far up their rectum, giving themselves a rush of air, creating a momentary high. This act is a sin against God." Charnchai took it further still. He started using a two-cylinder foot pump, but even that wasn't exciting enough for him, and he boasted to friends that he was going to try the compressed air hose at a nearby gasoline station. They dared him to do it so, under cover of darkness, he sneaked in.
Not realizing how powerful the machine was, he inserted the tube deep into his rectum, and placed a coin in the slot. As a result, he died virtually instantly, but passersby are still in shock. One woman thought she was watching a twilight fireworks display, and started clapping. "We still haven't located all of him.", say the police authorities. "When that quantity of air interacted with the gas in his system, he nearly exploded. It was like an atom bomb went off or something."

"Pumping is the devil's pastime, and we must all say no to Satan," Ratchasima concluded. "Inflate your tires by all means, but then hide your bicycle pump where it cannot tempt you."

Urban legends in Thailand | Thailand's Lost Boy

The next story of Thailand is about a man and his wife who were out driving one day, and somehow they ended up driving into the khlong. They managed to escape from their car and were rescued and taken to hospital. After being checked up and discharged they returned home. Within a few days, the man collapsed and died instantly. The autopsy revealed that he had contracted some kind of flesh eating disease that had eaten its way through his brain. This particular urban legend usually comes up in conversations that take place within sight of a khlong, but whether it’s a myth or not I don’t know.

Another, similar story involves a member of royalty. Itís usually told as if it happened to one of the princesses (though itís never clear which one). The tale goes that the princess, who could not swim, fell into a pool of water. Being the princess, all the people in attendance refused to help her because they were not allowed to touch members of the royal family. The princess subsequently drowned. I donít know if this Thai fable is true or not, but I have a hard time believing that a group of people would simply let a princess, or anyone, die. That being said, this is Thailand, and the way the monarchy is revered this might be fact rather than fiction.

This refers to what happened to Big, a Thai pop star, back in 2003. Fungal infection of the brain after crashing his car into a khlong. He was in a coma for 4 years and finally died in late 2007.

There's that one about tiny piranha-like elephants which live in rivers and poison you to death. Remember seeing that on the Discovery channel.

Are you referring to the boating accident in 1880? Queens and Consorts of Siam (about halfway down the page)

When they were building the second bridge onto phuket circa 1992, there was a huge rumour about disappearing children and the fact that bridge builders needed to put the skulls of babies into the foundations of a new bridge.

Even expat residents seemed to be caught up in this bullshit. I remember one friend saying to me "Surin, last night it was surin. They are coming further south each day to take a child". I thought, ewhat a fucking wally.

It even made the front page of the Thai papers, not the baby snatching / murders, the fact that there was a stupid rumour. Of course idiots read the headline and didn't cotton on that the newspaper was ridiculing the rumour. Lead to even more discussion.

I remember driving over the old bridge during the construction and thinking, damn they look just like a normal construction company with cranes and dredgers etc, rather than a team of quasimodo lookalikes snatching children in the dead of night.

Did they give any reasons why the builders would need baby skulls?
