The giving up the grog thread.

I have been drinking too much recently, well for the past 17 months to be specific. This nasty habit is starting to actually get in the way of my functionaity.
I am quite busy at the moment trying to set some stuff up, I'm either too tired to do anything in the morning or I'll stop off for an early afternoon drinky on my way to doing something important and it doesn't get done.

    other benefits of quitting.

    - financial benefits ( 12 cans of singha ad day sets one back anywhere between 10 and 12,000 baht a month, depending whether you are drinking in style or outside the 7-11)

    - the obvious health benefits

    - libido benefits??

    - weight loss. ( I have been growing lately)

    - Ability to exercise without palpatating.

Anyway, a few other posters like AO and wally might want to join me in this, a little moral support would be good for everyone...

Its quite scary if people have to weigh up the pros and cons of drinking in order to kick it. If you want to stop, just stop.

Back with the undcp we used to use 12 steps recovery program (the most successful method after methadone for heroin addicts but methadone method's a crap IMO) for substance abusers. Obviously you can't do it at home cos it needs a psychologist and a counselor. In case you wanna try it at home, the steps are:

    1. Honesty
    2. Faith
    3. Surrender
    4. Soul searching
    5. Integrity
    6. Acceptance
    7. Humility
    8. Willingness
    9. Forgiveness
    10. Maintenance
    11. Making contact
    12. Service

I personally noticed that this method of treatment works well with those who still have a little faith in God.

PM me if you need the details for each step.

Actually today should be rather easy, tomorrow however i get fed free beer as part of the reward for my quizzmastery at the irish bar.
Declining the freebies shall be an acid test.

I actually think I'd be too nervous on the mike without copious beer in my side.

But do you have to quit?

Have you tried just cutting down?
Only keeping one days worth at home (the reduced amount, I mean)?

Only going for one after work on certain days?

    i believe I do Lily.
I seem unable to stick to reduction type guidelines feeling the need to get utterly twatted in quick smart time.

I managed to quit for 6 months as part of amy Atkins regime 2 years ago, lost 12 kilos pretty quickly.
i still won't eat bread, rice or a potato, so i must have some willpower.

IMO, the English are much more out in front of the US with methadone treatment. On the other hand we have the US which is entirely too restrictive for methadone treatment to be maximally effective.

Methadone treatmeant ain't no treatment IMO. Its more like giving substance to get rid of another substance (at the end of the day the person will still depend on substance). I've been to kedleoscopic (?) project near Heathrow and found it useless to be honest.

    ^

It didnt work for most people though.

Mainly because they would only go on it, if it was a choice between prison and getting treatment. (Not all, but a majority)

Although, I suppose if it gets one person off heroin permanently, if is probably worth it.

Edit; Macha got in before me.

The only benefit of methadone is that after a dose you're still functional and can do the job where as heroin does the opposite. In the long run both are harmful and increases dependency.

Really didn't want to mention but now that you asked I must. I was a DDR project manager at the time and went there to see if methadone treatment's effective and feasible for Pakistan.

for some reason, you dont put so much weight on, you cant buy it in 7-11, it is not so good to drink in the daytime, it does have some health benefits

oh yes, and it does get you pissed

My point is that at least in countries like Europe and Australia it's at least available enough to have a chance at being effective.

Methadone is to heroin what nicotine skin patches and chewing gum are to cigarettes.

Fact: Methadone does not have the negative health impact that heroin does.

Both kills. Methadone will let you live probably 10 years more than heroin.

I only have knowledge of this topic because it's one of the social problems I had to study. I remember reading about a Swiss study that proved many myths about methadone to be false. Sorry, I can't even remember where to begin to research it.
I do remember that methadone patients can do many things straight up heroin addicts cannot like drive and take care of their kids and hold down jobs. I don't remember any negatives that totally outweighed the positives of methadone treatment.

^ The difference is though Macha, that people on a Methadone programme are monitored and have access to medical care and counselling.
