Would you be surprised to know ...

Many of you, I know, count me as one of your friends and in general just a good old bloke ... come on, you know you love ole Storekeep. So would it surprise you to know that my undergraduate degree is in Psychology and that I will finish a "Masters in Human Relations" at the end of this coming month ? You all respect my people skills, right ?

By the way ... I'm only telling this cause I don't want you to think I'm a head case :>)

I'm only 44 Macha and have no grandkids yet. I do supposedly have an illegitimate 28 year old son though back in Ohio.

    Hey Macha,

Do you live in Bangkok ? One of the things I think about doing in Thailand is getting even further edumacated at one of those fancy Thai universities. Don't you think it would be like icing on the cake for me to get a PhD from one of them ? Then I could adopt a fake Limey accent and maybe get a real TEFL job at one of them high falootin language schools. Good idea, eh mate ?

Now, now Macha. You're dealing with the new and improved SK. I can't give up all my bad habits in just one week now can I?

This thing with the education is about life-long learning. That's all. That's how you have to think about it. All of mine is/was at an age beyond what many people consider the norm.

In the case of talking about, or soliciting advice from the posters, going to school after I retire and begin residence in Thailand is almost like a hobby. It's not about rubbing it in people's faces or bragging. For me, I don't have much in the way of hobbies so going to school fits that niche quite nicely.

The other thing is the nicety of sitting on the nicety of a "Use it or lose it" bit of money that expires 10 years after the date I retire. The quality of the education means nothing to me ... the only requirement is that the school be accredited and recognized by the Veteran's Administration.

Another thing is basically consideration of what appears to be the average TEFL salary in Bangkok ... I'm guessing it to be about 30,000 baht. When I look at it like that then I have to ask myself why I would want to do that for my first 3 years in Thailand when after university expenses I would still have over 25,000 left over from that "use it or lose it money".

I'm just thinking the first 3 years might be better spent enjoying the view in the classroom vice leading the classroom.

Just to show you how flighty I can be ... I've also got this weird vision of just falling off the face of th earth for 3 years and then getting back into the working world. And even that would see a benefit from doing even a weak tit MBA at Bangkok University.

Just something to fill my time for 2-3 years is all. Cheers mateys.

I guess the best answer for me is only to be a TEFLer. But for many it's a stepping stone, like other degrees, to:

    ** Training and Development Specialist
    ** Group Facilitator
    ** Private Consultant
    ** Minority Student Counselor
    ** Community College Instructor
    ** Child Welfare Worker

And these are just a few ... I identified the above because I think these skills can translate over to fitting in the big bad TEFL world.
