Thailand Visa Run, where to go?

Okay, next month or the month after I have to do a visa run, so where should I go?

Laos, Vientiane is the cheapest and quickest plus the food is great in Vientiane, but I hear the place is chock full of visa runners and up to a couple of hours wait at the Thai consulate these days in giving in your passport and getting it back, my mate went a few weeks ago and reckoned he waited for 2 hours in the rain for his passport with his new visa in to be returned, that don't sound like much fun

Hong Kong, now this is a pretty good place as I wouldn't have to pay for a hotel or anything, the Thai embassy or consulate there probably doesn't treat people as cattle and expect them to stand outside under the sun or rain and probably treats you like a human being, albeit a lower class one than light skinned Thais.

Malaysia, Kota Bharu, now I got to admit I have never been there, they have a Thai consulate there that works odd days, think they are closed Fridays, but they have the beaches and the nearby Islands which look pretty good, Malaysia has good food, booze would be hard to get though in Kota Bharu, but hell I can manage without that for a few days, probably.

So, Nong Khai and onto Vientiane by bus? Fly to Hong Kong and live the high life? Or Malaysia by train down to Sungai Golok and on by bus or train to Kota Bharu?

Sod all that just drive down the border, there is a new crossing i found by accident a couple of months ago, you can drive it in about 2 hours 15 minutes, drive as if you were going to the Bang Lam (spelling) crossing and it is a good 30 km before that border, can't remember the name of the place on the Thai side, but the Cambodian side is called Prum. Got there about 1pm and border virtually deserted, straight across and back again in no time.

Chicago has a lovely embassy and is decent except for the Thai fella that sports an afro. He is an SOB for sure.

DD, it would give you a chance to eat at some of those places I recommended on your last trip!

A bit far, but you could give any united miles that you earn!

    Vietnam heaven:

    Angry, surly women.

    quadruple pricing.

    Hostility.

    Yelling at you.

    Spitting on you (accidentally)

People pee and poop in streets.

    No toilet paper.

    No wash hands.

    Why wash?

    PARADISE.

Cannot be beat. Da best in world.

    King of Kings here.

I thought Vietnam was a bargain. Food is cheap and much better than here. Beer is cheaper. A good room can be easily had for $20 a night.

Why not go to Thakhek or Savannakhet in Laos? There is a bridge connecting Mukdahan to Savannakhet - very quick. When I lived in That Phanom, Thailand, I went to Nakhon Phanom, took the boat to Thakhek, Laos (a ten minute ride), checked in, paid my $35, went over to the departure window, and took the boat right back to Nakhon Phanom. I guess this depends on where you are in Thailand and how long it takes you to get to Nongkhai, Mukdahan or Nakhon Phanom. But Nakhon Phanom to Thakhek is quick, you'll probably be the only farang on the boat, so no waiting once you get to Thakhek.
