    Australians Fatter Than Yanks

I am not sporting a six-pack of abs, that's for sure. But I do notice a lot of Aussie expats and tourists are significantly overweight.

The Tubby Conundrum is official for Oz: more Kangos are chubbier than Yankos.

    Redemption.

Australia has a higher proportion of obese people than the United States, with the health system facing a "fat bomb" unless action is taken, a study warned Thursday.

The report from the Baker Heart Institute found that 70 percent of men and 60 percent of women aged 45-65 had a body mass index of 25 or more, meaning they were overweight or obese.

Titled "Australia's Future Fat Bomb," the study compiled the results of height and weight checks carried out on 14,000 adult Australians in 2005.

The institute's head of preventative cardiology professor Simon Stewart said the results meant Australia probably had the highest rate of obesity in the world, outweighing even the United States.

"As we send our athletes off to the Olympics let's reflect on the fact that we would win the gold medal problem now in the world fat Olympics if there was such a thing," he said.

Stewart said obesity was the major threat to Australia's future health, with an estimated nine million of the 21 million population obese or overweight.

"That is a whole million more obese adults than we had thought," he said.
The study predicted there would be an extra 700,000 heart-related hospital ad

Most of my mates from Australia that live or travel to LOS regularly are pretty heavy lads (with a few exceptions and boarder line cases). Yet, most of my Aussy mates that live/work in Japan are pretty thin blokes. What's the deal with dat?

Well, it would have to be studied with validity,

    Diet?

How long were these Aussies living/working in Japan?

    Probably a coincidence.

Yea, probably just a coincidence but seems kind of odd.

Most of the lads in Japan have been working in Japan for over ten years and most of them are doing some kind of work related to the bar scene. Might be a combination of diet and costs; pretty easy to fill one's gob with tons of food cheap here in LOS, and not so easy to do in Tokyo.

Might also relate to being more active. Most of the lads in Japan are active (bike, football at the park, squash, etc), and most of the lads in LOS are not very active (too farkn' hot).

I wonder how this study works. They must judge it on how many people are x percentage of a certain amount overweight per capita.

I'm a little surprised that Australia has overtaken the US as the fattest nation though. No doubt, there are many big fat bastards here in Oz, but from my experience there are more really really big fat bastards in america..

^ Good to see you around, Wally.

Yeah, the study may not be accurate, depending on how they conducted it.

Obese folks everywhere. I don't think all of them have thyroid problems. I think it's self-shackled to fridge syndrome.

I suspect that it is more than that, beers would weigh heavily into the issue, as would a complete lack of exercise.
