Not "extremely proud". I believed that I performed a service by warning members of the forthcoming crackdown earlier this month, and yet a few bitter types seem to think that shooting the messenger was the best way to deal with the issue.

I believe that the vaste majority of people in the world would not opt to spend years of their lives working as an illegal immigrant, hence those that do could be described as being very unusual. I'm simply interested in what drives this "unusual" behavour.

So is there a topic to be debated here, or not?

as for why I try to understand you, it is useful to know why you say some of the things you do, why you react the way you do. I like you Smeg, you entertain me a lot, so why not try to sympathise with you?

I wanted to reply to the OP but I've lost my train........and my canoe.

Back in bournemouth I knew a few Asians and South Americans that were working illegally in restaurants and shops. They said that they did it because it was the only way to stay in the UK year after year, and they were desperate to avoid going home.

I can't understand the thought patterns of Westerners who come to Thailand and spend year after year here working illegally whilst building up a social life, business, renting a longterm condo etc. Are they not worried that their entire lifestyle rests on a knife-edge, and everything could collapse and be snatched away at any time?

If someone didn't want to go 'home' for whatever reason obviously working illegally is the best option.
You've always made referrences about 'the future' and where you expect to be in x years, which is the role model we are all spoon fed when we grow up, but to a lot of people living day to day is more enjoyable.

When you had 'It' and lost 'It' you realise that possessions and security actually don't mean fuckall when you 87 and on your deathbed.
Some folks need security, some don't.

So to answer your question........no, these people aren't particularly worried if it all goes tits-up tomorrow.

This is the point I don't understand. If these people are so passionate about staying here that they are willing to break the law to achieve it, how can they not be worried about the chance of losing it all tomorrow? That is where the logic breaks down....

I feel the need to poke me nose in this thread. I only hated Smeg when he sent nasty and vindictive PM to Kk, two years ago, which contained loads of shit about his family.

I do agree with many of Smeg's posts although they're mostly controversal. What good is a forum if there ain't no controversal posts / posters?

But don't these people stop and think "why are WPs so difficult and expensive to obtain?". If they did they would know that it is because any government is entitled to select who it allows to work within its economy and feed off its resources. Sticking two fingers up to that seems sad.

Its me thinking work permits are very cheap in LOS. Complicated? Yes it is complicated but a properly trained person will get it without much difficulty IMO.

IMO those who work illegally here in LOS are the one who can't get WPs cos they don't have the required qualification.

^ Look at the Indians and Thais in England for example, they should do the right thing and get work visas etc but they don't because they can't.

The same thing applies to some of the illegal aliens here but as you rightly point out, it is possible to get a working visa here.
I would say for many, who don't have the necessary qualifications, the very fact that so many are able to work here without the proper documents is as good as a green light to continue.

This situation has existed for decades, I'd assume, and all the while the Thai Govt is making more baht by turning a blind eye.
(A boozy farang teacher will spend every bit of his 32,000 baht a month in Thailand!)
It a case of Staus Quo (cue Marmite) it would be virtually impossible to kick out even half of the illegals without bringing certain industries to their knees so they remain.

I would also venture that the majority of those who want to stay here long term do in fact have work permits. I think the short term wanderers can see an opening and use it.

yes, being illegal is not a good solution, but it may be their only one.

If it does happen that they are caught, then that is a risk they take.

The illegals in the UK are there to earn good money

The ones in Thailand are here just to have a nice holiday for a while.

I am not sure how many are actually working without a WP for a long time
