Why do you think Thais hate or distrust foreigners?

I have lived and worked in this country for over 20 years and still to this day have absolutley no rights to buy land, buy a company outright let alone vote in an election.
I have been awarded the Prime Ministers Award for excellence regarding technology development in this country, have been directly involved in the creation of employment for over 14,000 Thai people and even my Thai wife still experiences obsticles when she attempts to buy land in her name!
Why, in your esteemed opinion do you think the reasons are?

The Thais practice the kind of policies that I wish my own country would.
My own country sold itslef down the river to the highest bidder and i dont live there any more as a result.
Kudos to the Thais for wanting to retain Thailand predominantly for Thais at a price level they can afford. Sure this can make it tricky for the long term expat who feels he is owed something but on the other hand it aint that difficult to live here dirt cheap and enjoy all the benefits that go with it.

one could argue that this is the main reason fueling the speculation on land, Thai overbidding each other to "maintain" the motherland

Clearly understood, good response but do you really believe it is the Thai National who makes the rules here?

My country has been sold down the river to the Japanese but at least I should be allowed to own a house here and to put up my family. For gods sake I am paying 4 times the national average salary per month and I certainly do not want to buy Buriram province!

This begs the question of why you haven't acquired Thai Nationality. I know people who've been here less time than you and made a far smaller contribution to the economy than you claim to have made. They acquired PR and then Thai Nationality and now have the same property, voting, and business rights as any other Thai citizen. Why haven't you done the same?

I don't think that, so why would you ask me why I do think that?

    That is the question....

Purely and simply and as the laws stand today I can never become a Thai National and hold a passport. I can become a permanent resident but still have to apply for a work permit and report to the imigration every 3 months.

Alternatively and if I was a female farang all I would need to do was marry a Thai male and then all of the benefits along with the Thai Nationality would be mine.

    Strange don't you think?

Regarding your claims (farange>PR> FULL THAI NATIONALITY) maybe the laws have changed without my knowledge!

You know, I got no idea who makes the rules or even if there are any

Your personal circumstances you describe make me think that Dr Bob is right in his PR question. The numbers involved for building a pad in Buriram should be small enough for an employer of 14,000 people not to worry about losing perhaps?

Dont you have to apply for residency first and then go on from there? The fees are a lot higher though.

    Fees:
    Application for a residence permit - 7,600
Approval of a residence permit (payable on receipt of residence book) - 191,400
Approval of a residence permit (payable on receipt of residence book) for a foreigner married to a Thai, the spouse of a resident, and any of their children who have not reached the status of a Thai juristic person (i.e., unmarried children aged below 20 years) - 95,700

Why is that? My wife of 18 years has no problems at all. Hell I am even listed on one of the bank loans.
Before she (my wife) can transfer land into her name I must first sign a declaration that the money invested in the property is hers alone and I have contributed nothing and hold no claim (and as her spouse) on the land. This document has to be submitted along with the other documents and when the land transfer application is completed.

The regulators at the land department firstly check my wifes Tabian Barn (House Book) and to find out if there are any farang names registered as living at that address. As my children retain my surname her appication was cancelled until I could provide a disclaimer document.

Once provided by me the transfer went through!

Regarding bank loans no problem. The banks are ready to take anyones money who wishes to give it.

Thank you for information. I have just got off the phone with my solicitor.

The quick channel to go theough is to bring in 40 Million Baht into the Kingdom and then your application may be pushed up the order.

Absolutely unfair. The process is obviously designed to make it as difficult as possible for foreigners to acquire citizenship while at the same time providing a way for the Thai government to say that they do actually have a process in place. The endemic corruption in Thailand also means that if you do go through this routine they will do their very best to bleed you dry in the process. Nevertheless it's still possible, whether it's worthwhile is up to the individual applicant.

I partially agree with the title of this thread although I would say that I don't think the vast majority of the Thai people either hate or distrust foreigners. I do, strongly, believe that the people at the top of the tree do hate and distrust foreigners and fear that foreign influence may corrode their power and status, however I also strongly believe that these same people at the top hate and distrust the ordinary Thai people just as much and for much the same reasons.

I partially agree with the title of this thread although I would say that I don't think the vast majority of the Thai people either hate or fear foreigners. I do, strongly, believe that the people at the top of the tree do hate and distrust
foreigners and fear that foreign influence may corrode their power and status, however I also strongly believe that these same people at the top hate and distrust the ordinary Thai people just as much and for the same reasons.
    Exactly Dr,

Let me throw another angle at it.

If you were to ask a TRUE Thai whether they prefer to have a Thai neighbour or a farand neighbour who do you think they would prefer?

Secondly you have a Thai farmer who suddenly becomes a potential millionaire because the ancestral land, which happens to be a rice paddy is suddenly one of the most sought after pieces of property near Ratchada Pisek in Bangkok.

He puts in on the market and based upon its true value and Mr. Farand Property developer (with a Thai Registerd Company) comes along with 60 Million Baht per Rai. Then the powers at be become involved, rehash old laws and to prevent the sale and eventually the farmer has to sell his goldmine at 25% its value and that value which is registered at the land office.

    Souns familiar???????

Have anyone here ever read the laws which are in place in Malaysia and Indonesia regarding a certain ethnic group. The laws are in place to inhibit this sector of society and to stop them in their historic quest and to rule their countries. At the same time stopping them from pusing the Buhmi Putra noses into the dirt.

Thailand unfoirtunately (and in my opinion) has already lost control!

Why, in your esteemed opinion do you think the reasons are?

Just because the above may be true does not mean that "Thais hate and distrust foreigners"

it may be just that the laws need updating and the lawmakers cant be bothered
