Boredom or Bullshit - is there another way in Thailand?

I'll have to say that my life here is just a mixture of boredom and bullshit with the occasional foray into temporary enjoyment.

Hum-drum job, not a lot of cash and my evenings spent mainly on my own in my non air-conditioned, cold watered, cockroach infested Troll pit. Most evenings I drink and smoke myself into a semi-oblivion before stumbling out into the heat the next day to walk to work.

There must be a better life avaliable out here - but how , what and when?

Many of the posters on TD seem to be fairly sorted in this respect perhaps either due to length of time spent here or being in the position to be able to come and go at choice.

    So a couple of questions:

    - anyone else here not exactly happy with their current lifestyle?

    - and those who are sorted (to an extent) how long did you have to endure the boredom and/or bullshit before Thailand became the paradise you had wished for?

I'm not exactly happy with my lifestyle to be honest.

But I think a lot of it is related to my age really. I'm at this stage in my life where I'm not sure what I wish to do in the future, I change my mind more than I change my underwear! I always thought when I was younger that one morning you'd wake up and say:

"Yeah! That is what I want to do with my life!"

But it dosen't happen that way, does it? I'm talking to older expats more and more often some tell me they found their job by accident, some are still looking and some still change their career choice every so often.

I guess that I have an advantage because I am still young and have a mind that can be shaped easily so I'll go back to my education.... But there is only one problem! I fear that if I make a decison now I may not like it in the next four years or even within the first week or so of Uni and I dont want to do that, it will be such a waste of time and money.

I also have to think about the availability of getting the job of choice in Thailand or Asia when I come out of education because I've heard of allsorts of horror stories of people not being able to find work after education. But again, I can not predict the future.

So until then I'm stuck in limbo watching every other person live their careers when I haven't even got one. The world flies by so fast when you are stuck!

Who knows maybe you lot have all been through this time in your lives before and I'm just being all silly and teenagerly. But life is about taking risks and maybe this is one of my first of many big risks to take in my life. My life will sort itself out, it always does.
    Welcome to the jungle!

Without wanting to be overly negative - why not leave and go somewhere else which you will enjoy more? I have lived and worked in more than 10 different countries - Thailand is by no means the best.

"Casey Jones steaming and a rolling
Casey Jones on the cross country
    express".

Sounds good to me as well. My father road the trains in the depression.
Some great stories, better to drive the train, or in the boxcars, damn what about "riding the rails" on 8 inch planks hung under the axles. Whoa!

Seeing as you asked for advice...and remember i'm like your grandfather...

First: get yourself some decent digs
....always my rule #1 for those who want to live here. Bangkok can be an overwhelming city, with its chaotic traffic, high noise levels, polluted air and abundant night life...
you really need a 'home'...somewhere you are happy to come back to after a shitty day...
if you get decent digs with air con & cable TV you'll save a lot of money by not going out so much...
should set you back about 10k/mth

Second: knock off the ciggies and booze at home...
they are luxuries which you cannot afford at this stage...and drinking at home on your own can easily lead to depression...

Third: get some classy threads...good clothes...and every day appply for better jobs....
when i first came to Bkk in 94 i knew noone...just got work by knocking on doors...
if you're teaching, forget ajarn.com...get out and knock on doors...
you'll find people will say ' can you start today?'

    Ok that's my thoughts...good luck

It's not overly negative but perhaps a little simplistic.

Anyway, what countries did you enjoy the most?

Yes, just waiting for my next pay check then I can move out of the cave!

second: knock off the ciggies and booze at home...

I was talking herb not tobacco - why would I want to smoke that tobacco shit?

they are luxuries which you cannot afford at this stage...and drinking at home on your own can easily lead to depression...

Not quite sure I'd call booze and dope luxuries - more like essentials!

Third: get some classy threads...good clothes...and every day appply for better jobs....

Can't be fucked as I'm often hungover or uninspired - prefer to arse about on TD than write c.v's and job hunt.

    Fuck ajarn.com - I agree with that.....

I see...I prefer spending some of my spare time on the TD rather than looking for work , thus I deserve to die.

really, if that's your attitude then you don't deserve anything better than you have and are wasting your time asking for others opinions...

you can be sure that none of the posters here on TD got where they are today by being pissed or stoned every night and too hungover the next day to get out and find a decent job

Dude comes on with some real questions, then we soon realize he don't give a fuck about fixin' his situation, but would rather whinge about it, drink and smoke hisself to oblivion, whinge about his situation, smoke and, well, we get the picture.
Dude showed up here, thought it was Disney Land; fuckin and suckin, drinkin' and smokin'. No time like now.
There are things you can do to improve your lot, folks have offered some sound advice; you can't be bothered. Tryin' to help a dude like this? Waste of fuckin' time. Good luck loser when you cme up on one of the fellas from Teak door beggin that "6000 to get home" be sure and tell, how hard you tried.

Perhaps one of the issues you allude to above is "control".

I surely wouldn't claim Thailand has become "...the paradise (I) had wished for." I'm not sure I ever thought it would be. I similarly doubt many of those you refer to would say so either.

The difference perhaps between yourself and myself (and some of them) is that we maintain some sort of feeling of control of our situation. Accordingly, when things are a bit "boring or bullshit" we are able to not let it get to us too much as we believe we have clear options.

These options may be because of our financial situations, educational backgrounds, employment (past or present)...whatever....and sometimes this control may be a little self-delusionary. But it nevertheless postively affects our outllook and attitudes.

    Thankyou for your advice.

I will go back to my education when I figure out what I want to study, that a big decison to me because I dont want to make the wrong choice and ruin my life.

I also need to think about where I wish to work after I finish my education then about the job availability in that place. I'm actually very nervous about making a wrong choice.

    Decisons, decisons!
