Ayutthaya Bank - A Village Mentality

A good friend of mine arrived in Thailand for his first visit to the Land of Snickers. He is in a battle with the bank. He popped his US bank's ATM card in to one of the Ayutthaya bank's ATM machine somewhere on Silom. Of course it ate his card and when he went into the bank the next morning (at opening time) to get it back, they told him no and that they were going to throw it it away. They said he had to contact his bank and have the card sent here. He called his bank and they said they will not send a card overseas and he has stopped his mail at his house until he gets back.

He is older and has no family in the states to wire him money. The guy is debt free in the US and has never believed in credit cards. He also is not one to carry large amounts of cash on him.

He has some money, but not no even close enough to cover 10% of his vacation. He plans on touring all around Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos.

Should he get into a battle with the bank over this or should I loan him the cash?

Has anyone else had this happen and has throwing a fit and demanding the bank to give you your card back got you any results???

    Thanks guys,
    Chi

He is a dumb ass for relying on only one source of funds for overseas.

His Bank should be able to FedEx a card to his hotel and he could activate it by phone.

^ I think KW's right. Throwing a fit won't help. Seek a solution from the US bank.

I once had me card eaten by Auytthaya bank ATM. Went to the bank next day and got it back.

Maybe your friend's making up stories to get some loan off you.

    Not out here.

Just call up security out of hours and they open the machine for your

In hours the teller will open it for you.

Far cry from the UK where the cards are rendered useless.

Likewise a few years back. During office hours at the Bangkok Bank, they opened the machine and gave me my card back.

Visa and Mastercard will not sent cards to Thailand due to the high risk of postal theft.
I have to have mine sent to either Singapore, or, Australia, then DHL them to Thailand.

No he has plenty of money. I have known him for some time. His bank is going to send the card to his neighbors and she will send it to me. He will be traveling every couple of days and not sure where he will be staying.

I fronted him some dough until then!

Chi, why not open and account here for him in Thailand in your name (make it easy by him not having to front WP or whatever) give him the atm card and he can then change the pin, He can then have a wire sent from home into that account.
I always open this kind of account for pals of mine that come here on vacation. They arrive with a big pile of pounds, change it to baht and put it into the thai account. No banking nonsense for the rest of their time here and when there ready to go home they give me the card back and there might even be a few K left in the account for me

This happened with us as recently as a week ago. ATM swallowed the card, a trip to the bank and they said collect the card the next day. As Mrsq says, there is no chance in the UK, they will just destroy the card and tell you to get a new one from your bank.

    This man is a LOSER.

    Don't give him money.

End your relationship with the LOSER.

He is a scum bag loser.

    When you travel:
You have at least 2 bank cards, at least 2 credit cards, and money in cash and money in Traveller's checks.

Why do you hang out with LOSERS.

    Are you a loser?

    Yeah, really silly.

First time this guy is traveling abroad?

Sure he'll know how to do an international transfer to repay the loan when he'll get back?

    Are you serious MM?

The guy is far from loser status. He has never had a credit card (does not believe in them), never uses his ATM card even in the states, nor has he traveled abroad before. He pays cash for everything and is kind of like the classic guy from the book "The Millionaire Nest Door". He is in his 60's, wife died a few years ago and actually on his first trip out of the US.

Real nice fella that gets along with everybody. Just not a seasoned traveler - I think his biggest adventure was going to the Grand Canyon once!

Good thing is that he is friends with the post master in his home town and he telephoned him and he is going to pull the newly issued ATM card for him and send it to my place. He stopped his mail during his trip and the neighbor can't get his mail!

Yes, Marmers I was at the Cheese Pot.

I've been busier lately with work. That's good for me.

I did over-react with my comments. But I cannot understand some people. I would never dare go so far abroad with only a bank card with my funds....in the a bank half-way around the world.

    Cheers.
