As Farangs, Are We Too Uptight?

I read a lot of posts and threads complaining about slow service at Tesco or the "mai pen rai" attitude of the Thais, maybe that Thai ladies are immature etc.....

I am not condemning anyone, I am examining myself and sharing the examination with TD.

I often fall in to one of the "pits of hell" (what I call a situation in Thailand that frustrates me beyond reason!) and get fed up with things and often post about it here as well. But I do love Thailand!

We enjoy the easy way of life in Thailand, so does it stand to reason that we would not enjoy Thailand if things were fast pace just like the rat race at home?

Maybe the immature Thai ladies would not bring the youth out in us if they were "mature women" like those found in our home countries?

Are these threads and posts just us applying our Western thinking to Thai thinking?

Are some of things we hate the most the very same things that attracted us to Thailand?

    Are we to uptight?

    Your thoughts?

Yes, we are too Uptight. We are the Anal Retentive's of the modern world. We should chill out a bit more, and stop comparing everything to ourselves.

We should laugh more at absurdity, not always try to make logical sense of chaos. We should sack our psychiatrists and Dr Ruths, and spend less on happy Pills. Or not leave Home. Living forever does not matter, living Now does.

    Good Post.

Yes, we are definitely too uptight. ffs, we should just enjoy our short time on this earth. Thailand is one of the best places to forget the angst of first world life.

Excellent OP, I agree with Sabang, we way too uptight, while I have less "farang moments" than I did a few years ago, sometimes I just loose it and then end up embarrassing the Mrs and feeling a bit of a stupid cvnt later on.
Its worse when you are on the other end of someones else Farang intolerance. Yesterday I rode up to the T junction out of our village, to turn right you have to pull well out to see, as the right turn is over 90 deg, I pulled out into the road to see and saw a bike coming so stopped, he came past me and was muttering something, so I gave a cheery "Fellow Farang" smile, as he came closer I could hear what he was saying.
" Fvcking idiot ! why are u parked in the middle of the road" So I let loose with a mouthful of profanities at him, "If you used yr indication u fvcking moronic cvnt. I could see where u intended to go" etc

    Generally speaking, many westerners are.

    It's the cultural difference, IMO.

I was lot more uptight my first 1.5 years in South East Asia. Now I'm a lot more mellow and relaxed about many things.

But....if someone is screwing me around, wasting my time, or costing me to lose money I will address the issue, as anybody should.

Yes, it's true and having worked with old people and some disabled kids, I thought I had a pretty long fuse. Sometimes, though, I get so frustrated with the waiting around for papers to be examined. With the attitude that it will be ok in the end, but I can't see the middle, let alone the end. I am better than I was when I first got here but I could be a whole lot more chilled, sometimes, in situations where I really want to shout.

Dunno, Chi. I see your point, but if I wasn't more uptight than many of the Thais I know, I'd never get anything done. It's the fact that I do want things done right & on time that get the dogs better. If I was more laid back & relaxed about things, dogs wouldn't get their meds (or not when they needed them), wound dressings wouldn't get done thoroughly, minor problems just wouldn't get attended to.

The one thing that really gets me wound up is the lack of consideration for others, me first attitude, so I try an avoid situations where this will wind me up.
Like parking at my daughters school, if you park you can guarantee that they will double or triple park on the road so when you come back to yr car, you can't get out.
I park a little way down the road, its no hardship because its less than an extra minutes walk. Potential problem averted.

In a working environment the Thais are far more uptight than the westerners (except for the Germans maybe...)

I cant stand the up tight farangs that complain all the time and twist off at their wives or other Thais at the slights thing. Sure I have a bad day now and then and want to kill a few of them which normaly means I need to go and get really pissed some where and relax before I totally lose the plot

But its a trade for the angst of second/third world life, I guess if you can adapt, its gonna be plain sailing. Some guys really struggle, some dont. Some were nutters in their home country so behaving like a nutter in thailand comes naturally

There are only three things in Thailand that wind me up, dangerous drivers, crap internet and being lied to / manipulated.
Everything else is just white noise in the background.

I'm a Patient man. With machines, animals, young children, the elderly and handicapped. I not wrapped real tight and accept the slower pace here. I am less than patient with inconsiderate or just plain ignorant (dumb) behavior. I've lived here long enough to know losing my temper ain't gonna help, so some times I'll have fun with it. The blank stares after you've gone over, step-by-step, a bit of the illogical logic that might confront you can be therapeutic. Some times I just get downright obstinate and refuse to bend.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with expecting things to be done as agreed, when agreed. You do not have to accept every shit sandwich you are served and can get usually things done if you can keep your cool. There is no reason to mumble "Mai phen Rai" at every disappointment. Stand your ground, keep cool and do not settle for anything less than fair. Getting wound up about it when things don't happen as planned is just a fools game. Red-faced, spittle flying, jumping up and down is merely entertainment for the natives, and a few of expats.

Last night, or was it the night before? I was out & about in a tourist/bar area shooting some night shots of the local color. No traffic. I was in the street shooting a long shot. I hear a horn beep. Plenty of room to go 'round but OK, I moved. Nice lookin' Thai woman gives me a look that would've killed a lesser man. I smile my broadest smile. She flips me off. Couldn't help laughing as I returned the salute. She turns six shades of red, peels off wishing she could make noise than she did. Hotel van driver behind her makes eye contact, Laughs along with me.

There are many more uptight Thais wandering the street of Thailand than uptight western folk. They are even more fun to watch get wound up.

Maybe if western countries had the Thai "mai pen rai" attitude then they would also be backward third world countries, sorry I should have said "developing nations".

I agree, but have to add the telephone company chicks. And sometimes the cable company chicks. And sometimes the bank chicks.

no we aren't, but we often forget than less than 50 years ago, Thais were living in the jungle and eating from the trees, yet we expect them to be at par with us in terms of social evolution, all this in less than 50 years, for what took us a few centuries to accomplish.
